Job description

Mercury is a bold future-focused organisation, providing energy and telecommunications to more Kiwis than anyone else, leading the way with renewable energy and working toward a sustainable future. At the heart is our purpose. Taking care of tomorrow: connecting people and place today. This pushes us to do all we can to create a better future for our people, our communities, and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Bring your electrical engineering experience closer to the assets and people that keep Aotearoa New Zealand powered.

As our Site Engineer - Electrical, you'll provide technical engineering support to the maintenance and operational teams responsible for Mercury's renewable hydro generation assets. You'll work on practical engineering challenges that directly influence asset reliability, performance and safety, from investigating equipment issues and assessing asset condition through to managing engineering improvements and supporting complex work back into service.

This is a site-based role where you'll work closely with operators, maintainers, project teams and other engineering specialists. We're looking for someone who can bring sound electrical engineering judgement to complex problems while valuing the practical knowledge and perspectives of the people working with our plant every day.

As a site-based role, your location of work will be a hydro station along the Waikato river and may suit people living in the Hamilton, Cambridge, Rotorua, or Taupo regions.

Tāu e mahi ai | What you'll be doing:
  • Provide electrical engineering support to maintenance, operational and project teams, helping resolve complex plant and equipment issues
  • Monitor and assess asset condition, performance, risk and life expectancy to support sound engineering decisions
  • Investigate equipment performance and failures, identify underlying causes and help eliminate recurring defects
  • Identify and assess equipment integrity threats and develop practical remedial solutions
  • Manage site-based engineering projects and improvements through to implementation
  • Carry out and supervise plant inspections, engineering assessments and failure assessments
  • Provide engineering oversight and QA/QC support for complex work returning to service
  • Ensure engineering changes are appropriately assessed and managed through Mercury's Management of Change process

You’ll bring relevant electrical engineering experience and the technical depth to investigate problems, assess risk and develop practical, well-reasoned solutions. You'll be comfortable taking ownership of engineering issues and working through complexity rather than relying on others to provide the answer. Just as importantly, you'll know that good engineering outcomes come from working well with the people around you. You'll listen to and draw on the practical knowledge of operators and maintainers, communicate technical issues clearly and be comfortable constructively challenging or being challenged when working towards the right outcome.

You'll bring:
  • A Bachelor of Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Strong, relevant electrical engineering experience, including solving complex plant or equipment problems
  • The ability to break complex problems into their component parts and develop logical, pragmatic solutions
  • The ability to apply sound engineering judgement when assessing equipment condition, performance and risk
  • An effective, collaborative approach to working with operational, maintenance, project and engineering teams
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to explain technical issues to people with different areas of expertise

Experience within electricity generation or process environments would be an advantage.

  • Additional 5 days leave per annum (MyDays)
  • $400 one off tax-free payment towards setting up your home office
  • Offers on electricity and telco - if you're a Mercury customer, you can enjoy some great discounts on your electricity and telco bill
  • A diverse workplace where your unique abilities and talents will be recognised and encouraged
  • Annual salary reviews with excellent parental leave policy, with the option to purchase additional leave
  • The opportunities, career paths and facilities associated with working for one of New Zealand's largest multi-utility providers
  • Flexible working policy - The autonomy and trust to work flexibly from our purpose-built premises and from home, recognising the value of this flexibility in the modern world
  • Discounted health insurance and free life and income insurance
  • Excellent well-being programme including up to $100 annual check ups and confidential assistance programme
  • Gender affirmation leave and supportive bereavement leave to be taken when you lose anyone close to you, including your pet
