Job summary

OceanaGold is offering a paid Underground Geology internship at the Waihi operation. You will work on-site in a full-time Monday–Friday schedule (50 hours/week) from mid-November to mid-February, gaining hands-on experience in geology with mentors guiding you through real projects.

You should be a current student in a BSc Geology or Earth Sciences program, in your 2nd last or final year, with strong academics and excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Qualifications

  • Ideally pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Geology or Earth Sciences
  • Be in your 2nd last or final year of study

Responsibilities

  • Gain practical experience on diverse projects within the Underground Geology team
  • Participate in group activities with other interns to learn mining processes

  • Support underground geologists with face sampling, LIDAR scanning, ore drive markup and mapping
  • Dispatch samples and import to Acquire databases; data validation

Job Description

Are you a talented and ambitious student studying towards a Bachelor of Science (BSc), with a major in Geology or Earth Sciences and looking to gain practical experience in your field of study? We have the perfect opportunity for you to join our Underground Geology team at OceanaGold working at our Waihi operation.

This paid internship opportunity will run approximately from mid-November through to mid-February (dependent on exam timetable of the successful applicant) working with our talented Underground Geology team on-site at Waihi. The hours of work are 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday (50 hrs per week). Enjoy your weekends exploring the stunning Coromandel!

What will you be doing?

  • Gaining practical experience in your chosen field of study by working on diverse projects assigned by department managers and team members.
  • Participating in various group activities and projects with other Interns, providing you with a well‑rounded knowledge of the mining process.
  • Presenting your experiences and key learnings to the Site Management Team at the conclusion of the internship, showcasing your growth and achievements.

Specific project work will involve:

  • Provide support to underground geologists with face sampling, LIDAR scanning, ore drive markup, ore drive and waste mapping.
  • Sampling dispatching and importing to Acquire databases.
  • Data validation.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Provide coverage over the summer period.
  • Ensure core is logged over summer for data flow into LOMP 2028 models.
  • Help implement and complete project work.

Qualifications

What do I need, to join the Intern program?

  • Ideally have accommodation options at Waihi or surrounding areas
  • Full Class 1 Drivers licence (ability to drive manual vehicles is preferred)
  • Unrestricted New Zealand working rights
  • Available from mid-November 2026 through to mid-February 2027
  • In your 2nd last or final year of role related study
  • Studying towards a Bachelor of Science (BSc), with a major in Geology or Earth Sciences
  • Current & strong academic performance and a passion for your chosen field
  • Effective communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
