Job summary

Horizon Services Limited in Palmerston North is recruiting two Trainee Line Mechanics to join our team and start a structured pathway toward becoming a qualified Line Mechanic. You'll work with experienced professionals across overhead and underground networks while training under industry-recognised programs.

This role suits someone who enjoys outdoor work, is safety‑conscious and eager to develop technical skills for a long-term career in the electricity industry.

Qualifications

• NCEA maths and English (or equivalent).
• Current unrestricted manual NZ driver’s licence.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Commitment to safety and following procedures.
• Physical fitness and willingness to work outdoors.
• Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces.
• Motivated, reliable and self-driven learner.
• Basic computer skills and ability to complete documentation accurately.
• Customer-focused attitude and willingness to support the wider team.

Responsibilities

• Assist qualified Line Mechanics with construction, maintenance and fault response work.
• Support installation, repair and replacement of overhead lines and underground cables.
• Participate in a training programme toward a Level 4 Line Mechanic qualification.
• Learn industry regulations, electrical infrastructure practices and safe work procedures.
• Complete job documentation and maintain accurate records.
• Collaborate with the wider field services team to deliver high-quality outcomes.
• Follow all health, safety and environmental requirements.

About the role

As a Trainee Line Mechanic, you'll join our Palmerston North team and begin a structured pathway towards becoming a qualified Line Mechanic. We are currently recruiting for 2 positions. Working alongside experienced professionals, you'll gain practical experience across overhead and underground electricity network infrastructure while completing industry-recognised training.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working outdoors, learning technical skills, and building a long-term career in the electricity industry.

Key responsibilities include:

• Assisting qualified Line Mechanics with construction, maintenance and fault response work
• Supporting the installation, repair and replacement of overhead lines, underground cables and associated equipment
• Participating in a structured training programme leading towards a Level 4 Line Mechanic qualification
• Learning industry regulations, electrical infrastructure practices and safe work procedures
• Completing job documentation and maintaining accurate records
• Working collaboratively with the wider field services team to deliver high-quality customer outcomes
• Following all health, safety and environmental requirements at all times

Hours of work

Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm.

About you

We're looking for someone with a strong work ethic, a positive attitude and a genuine interest in developing a career within the electricity industry.

To be successful, you'll bring:

• NCEA achievement in Maths and English (or equivalent)
• A current unrestricted manual New Zealand driver's licence
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• A commitment to working safely and following procedures
• Physical fitness and a willingness to work outdoors in varying conditions
• The ability to work at heights and in confined spaces

Previous experience in a trade, construction, utilities, or related environment would be advantageous, but is not essential, as full training and support will be provided.
