Job summary

Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers is seeking a dual-skilled fibre telecom technician to haul, splice, test, and install cabling and equipment across sites in Auckland. You will configure routers, switches, VoIP gateways, and copper/fibre networks while adhering to WorkSafe NZ rules and site safety protocols.

The role requires 2–3 years in optical transport and active hardware, a clean NZ driver’s license, and relevant NZQA telecom credentials.

Qualifications

• 2–3 years hands-on experience in optical transport and active network hardware.
• NZ Class 1 Driver's License; Class 2 preferred.
• Site Safe and Working at Heights credentials.
• NZQA Telecommunications certifications preferred.
• Strong IP subnetting, DNS, VLAN understanding.

Responsibilities

• Haul, blow, and route fibre optic cables in ducts and overhead networks.
• Perform fusion splicing and termination in exchanges and customer premises.
• Install, configure, and commission routers, switches, VoIP gateways, and NTDs.
• Set up Cat6/6A and coaxial cabling.
• Conduct tier-1 testing with OTDR and power meters to certify links.
• Use sniffers and diagnostics to isolate IP routing or copper faults.
• Lead on-site walkthroughs to plan cable paths and hardware placement.
• Maintain adherence to WorkSafe NZ, heights, and wholesale network guidelines.

Job description

Key responsibilities

Haul, blow, and route fibre optic cables across underground ducts and overhead utility networks

Perform highly precise fusion splicing and termination inside exchanges, street cabinets, and customer premises

Install, configure, and commission telecommunications hardware including commercial routers, switches, VoIP gateways, and network terminal devices

Set up and optimize structured copper cabling (Cat6/6A) and coaxial distribution systems

Conduct tier-1 testing using optical equipment (OTDR, Optical Power Meters) to certify fibre links

Utilize network packet sniffers, signal meters, and diagnostics software to isolate and resolve complex IP routing anomalies, copper faults, or signal degradation

Lead on-site walkthroughs with residential and commercial stakeholders to engineer optimal cable paths and hardware placement prior to installation

Maintain uncompromising adherence to WorkSafe NZ regulations, working at heights safety protocols, and standard operating environments dictated by primary wholesale network owners like Chorus

About you

Minimum 2-3 years of hands‑on experience spanning both optical transport layers (splicing/testing) and active network hardware layer configuration

Current, clean NZ Class 1 Driver's License (Class 2 would be advantage)

Active Site Safe passport and Working at Heights credentials

Telecommunications NZQA certifications (or equivalent international credentials matching ANZSCO 342411) are heavily preferred

Strong understanding of IP subnetting, DNS, VLAN configurations, and optical power budget calculations

Capability to lift up to 25kg, comfortably operate in confined crawlspaces, and work outdoors in all New Zealand weather conditions

Ability to perform civil work, advantage if have digger license.

Must clear a pre‑employment drug and alcohol screen alongside a clean Ministry of Justice (MoJ) background check

Highly competitive hourly rate ($28-$38+/hr) reflective of a dual‑skill operator
