Job description

Jora New Zealand will close on 9th September 2026. Thank you for being with us, we are cheering you on as you continue your career journey.

Poppy Holdings Limited – Whakatane, North Island

This is a practical, hands-on role for someone who understands construction and wants broader responsibility across technical coordination, design, compliance and site.

Working with our Operations Coordinator and reporting to the Managing Director, you’ll help keep the technical side of our projects moving — reading plans, checking buildability, reviewing consultant information, resolving gaps, and progressing engineering and consent requirements.

A key part of the role is becoming our in-house expert in our building design system and tools — understanding how they work, where their limits are, and keeping information accurate from early design through construction.

You’ll have real ownership of your work. You’ll do well here if you’re self-managing, collaborative and comfortable taking initiative, while knowing when something needs input or escalation. Clear communication and accurate project information matter.

Key Responsibilities

Read and interpret plans and details, identifying buildability issues, conflicts and missing information before they reach site.

Review information from designers, engineers and consultants and work through issues until there is a clear, buildable outcome.

Work through consent and compliance requirements — preparing information, responding to RFIs, updating documentation and helping drive issues to close-out.

Become the in-house expert in our building design system and tools, keeping outputs accurate and practical.

Prepare mark-ups and technical information and work with designers as drawings develop.

Get onto site to connect the plans and details with what is actually being built.

Help identify materials, technical requirements and information needed before construction starts.

As your capability develops, there is room to broaden into estimating, commercial work and project management.

About You

You don’t need the perfect CV or a particular job title. You do need a good understanding of construction, sound judgement and the ability to take responsibility for your own work.

You understand construction and read plans confidently — you know how buildings actually go together.

You are self-managing and dependable — you keep things moving without needing to be chased.

You recognise when something doesn’t look right and know when to work through it or bring in specialist input.

You’re comfortable engaging with compliance and consenting processes.

You enjoy getting into the detail and problem solving.

You work well with others — able to own your part while keeping the wider team informed.

You communicate clearly and can make sensible progress without having every step mapped out.

Experience and background:

Practical or technical construction experience in residential, commercial or industrial building.

Your background could be builder, foreman, site manager, detailer, coordinator, estimator, architectural technician or similar.

Some exposure to engineers, consultants, councils, consent or compliance is useful; willingness to engage with them is essential.

Steel portal, shed construction, detailing or design-software experience is an advantage, not a requirement.

Formal qualifications are welcome but not essential — capability and judgement matter more than title or certificates.

About Us

We are a growing construction business based in Whakatāne. We build commercial, industrial, and residential structures across the Eastern Bay of Plenty. We are lean, system-driven, and moving with purpose. We take ownership of what we build and how we operate.

Real responsibility from early on, with support when you need it.

A broad role across technical coordination, design, compliance and site.

Room to develop into wider commercial and project responsibilities.

The chance to become the in-house expert in a building system and tools that are central to how we work.

A small team where people work closely together and are trusted to own their work.

We’re also recruiting across our wider project delivery team and are open to finding the right fit between your strengths, where you want to develop, and what the business needs.
