Job summary

Wellington Electricity in Upper Hutt is seeking a Team Leader GIS to lead the GIS capability across the business, ensure accurate network data and governance, and drive data-driven decision making. The role balances strategic direction with hands-on delivery, collaborates with Asset Planning, Network Operations, SCADA and IT, and offers a path to real community impact.

  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on delivery.
  • A tertiary qualification in GIS, Information Management, Engineering, IT, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with tools such as GE Smallworld and Electric Office are desirable but not essential

The Opportunity

The Team Leader GIS position is a key role responsible for providing end to end leadership of Wellington Electricity’s GIS capability.

Working across the business, you will set the strategic direction for GIS and spatial data while ensuring our systems, data models and integrations accurately represent the electricity network and deliver meaningful business value.

You will provide leadership across GIS governance, standards, data quality and technical direction. You will also support the continued development of integrations between GIS and other critical business systems including Asset Planning, Network Operations, SCADA and Customer Service.

You will work closely with the Data Team to contribute to Wellington Electricity’s data strategy, ensuring GIS and spatial data are aligned with enterprise data governance, analytics, integration, and business intelligence objectives.

You will lead initiatives that strengthen Wellington Electricity's data-driven decision-making capability by improving access to reliable, integrated, and actionable business data.

This is a hands-on role where you will balance strategic improvement with operational delivery, working closely with technical teams, business stakeholders, vendors and service providers.

What You’ll be Doing

In the Team Leader GIS role with Wellington Electricity, you will:

Lead the strategic direction and ongoing development of Wellington Electricity's GIS capability.

About You

We're looking for a technically strong GIS professional who combines leadership capability with a practical, solutions focused approach.

To succeed in this role, you'll bring:

Significant experience in GIS, asset data or electricity distribution environments.

Proven experience leading GIS initiatives, systems or teams.

Strong knowledge of GIS platforms, integrations and spatial data management.

Experience with tools such as FME and QGIS.

Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.

The ability to balance strategic thinking with hands on delivery.

A tertiary qualification in GIS, Information Management, Engineering, IT, or equivalent experience.

Experience with tools such as GE Smallworld and Electric Office are desirable but not essential
