Job summary

Central Otago District Council seeks an experienced Building Control Team Lead to guide and develop a local team while remaining hands-on with technical Building Control work.

You will coordinate inspections, provide senior leadership on consent processing and Code Compliance Certificates, and drive continuous improvement across the district's Building Control service.

Qualifications

  • Qualified with Regulation 18 building industry qualification.
  • 5–7 years Building Control experience.
  • Residential 1–3 and Commercial 2 competency across BCA functions.
  • Sound knowledge of the Building Act, Building Code and BCA accreditation environment.
  • Leadership experience through coaching, mentoring or supervising others.
  • Sound judgement and the confidence to make and support regulatory decisions.
  • Strong communication, organisation and problem-solving skills.
  • A collaborative leadership style.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach and develop Building Control Officers, supporting their performance and growth.
  • Coordinate workloads, resources and inspection coverage to meet statutory timeframes.
  • Provide senior technical leadership across consent processing, inspections and Code Compliance Certificates.
  • Support your team with complex or higher-risk technical and regulatory matters.
  • Promote consistent, well-reasoned and defensible regulatory decision-making.
  • Contribute to Quality Assurance, BCA accreditation and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with the other Team Lead to balance resources and maintain district-wide consistency.
  • Work with Regulatory Support and Building Support teams to deliver a joined-up service.
  • Continue undertaking technical Building Control work to maintain professional competency.

Job description

These are hands-on leadership roles for experienced Building Control professionals who enjoy developing people, solving technical challenges and making a real difference to how a Building Control service performs.

You won't be stepping away from the technical work. You'll combine your Building Control expertise with day-to-day leadership of a local team, helping our people grow, supporting sound regulatory decisions and working alongside your fellow Team Lead to deliver a consistent Building Control service across Central Otago.

You'll lead and support Building Control Officers at your service centre while remaining actively involved in technical Building Control work. You'll:

  • lead, coach and develop Building Control Officers, supporting their performance, competency and professional growth
  • coordinate workloads, resources and inspection coverage to keep work moving and support statutory timeframes
  • provide senior technical leadership across consent processing, inspections and Code Compliance Certificates
  • support your team with complex or higher-risk technical and regulatory matters
  • promote consistent, well-reasoned and defensible regulatory decision-making
  • contribute to our Quality Assurance System, BCA accreditation and continuous improvement
  • work closely with the other Team Lead to balance resources and maintain consistency across the district
  • work alongside our Regulatory Support and Building Support teams to deliver a joined-up service
  • continue undertaking technical Building Control work to maintain your own professional competency

This is an opportunity to shape how Building Control is delivered at service-centre level while being part of one district-wide team.

You'll have the opportunity to influence team capability, technical consistency, service delivery and continuous improvement - without losing the hands-on Building Control work that keeps you connected to the profession.
