Job summary

IDEA Services is seeking a dedicated Support Worker to assist individuals with intellectual disabilities in Hawke’s Bay. The role involves supporting daily living, managing risk, and promoting independence in a caring, community-based setting.

Experience in disability or aged care is preferred. A calm demeanor, physical fitness, and the ability to work alternate weekends are essential; a full NZ driver’s license is required.

Support Worker - Hawkes Bay (Behavioural support)
  • Permanent full time - 65 hours per fortnight
  • Availability to work alternate weekends is required
  • Rostered shifts are 7am to 3pm (one shift on Monday of week 2 will be 7am to 4pm)

IDEA Services supports people with intellectual disabilities to enjoy great lives at home and as part of their community.

As a Support Worker you will be supporting people with intellectual disabilities to enjoy great lives. This is meaningful work where you can be creative and make every day interesting in ways that are important to others. You will be supporting clients with complex needs, managing risk, ensuring safety, and providing individual care. We would prefer someone who has previous experience working within the disability sector or aged care. Dealing with challenging behaviour can be tough, but with the right approach, we can make a difference, promote positive behaviours, and create a supportive environment for people to thrive. You will be supporting individuals with complex behavioural support needs. Part of what you do each day will be helping them to recognise and respond to emotional overwhelm and react safely to this. We are looking for someone physically active who has the resilience and confidence to work with challenging behaviours and high personal care needs.

This role involves helping the people we support to:

  • recognise and respond to emotional overwhelm.
  • grow their independence and learn skills for daily living such as using public transport, getting a job, cooking a meal.
  • manage their daily routines - toileting, showering, getting dressed, take medication or eat a meal.
  • pursue their goals, interests, and hobbies.
  • stay healthy and making positive choices about their lifestyle.
  • have strong connections with their whānau and community.

Previous relevant experience is preferred, but more importantly, we are looking for someone with varied life experience and the right attitude.

  • Preferably previous experience in caregiving or providing personal care for adults.
  • Previous expereince with using hoists and peg feeding would be advantageous.
  • A calm nature and confidence to work with challenging behaviours.
  • Availability to work flexible shifts including alternate weekends.
  • Comfortable and proficient in using computers and tablets daily.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Physical fitness to provide necessary physical support.
  • Full NZ driver's license.
