Who We Are

OpenStarTechnologies is on a mission to repeat the feats of Māui and capture the power of the Sun. By mastering fusion - the process that powers the stars - we can generate safe, clean, carbon‑free, base‑load electricity in a way that is economically scalable to the challenge of mitigating climate disaster and giving birth to the next industrial revolution. Our team is made up of talented engineers and physicists, based in Wellington, New Zealand.

About the Role

The Software team develops and maintains systems to support our mission, including critical control systems, scientific instrumentation and modelling, and internal business tools.

The candidate will join the Software team to build and develop internal software tools. Working with the latest in front-end technologies, server-side development, machine learning techniques, and systems programming, the candidate will be responsible for gathering requirements, designing, developing, testing, and deploying software.

This is a broad project that can span various aspects of software engineering (depending on the candidate) including:

  • Front end development of user-friendly interfaces
  • Backend development to implement business logic and work with databases
  • Pioneering ML-based solutions to fusion-specific challenges
  • Systems programming to aid the development of human‑machine‑interfaces

This internship provides the opportunity to take a lead on the implementation of projects with the support of the wider software team through pair coding sessions, code review, and user testing.

Key Responsibilities
