Job summary

Suncorp New Zealand is seeking an Assistant Underwriter to join the Business Distribution team in Christchurch. The role focuses on SME commercial insurance, renewal propositions, and delivering excellent outcomes for intermediaries and customers.

You’ll support new and existing SME business while developing underwriting capabilities. You’ll work with our Distribution team and intermediaries to drive profitable growth, build strong relationships, and contribute to continuous improvement

Qualifications

• 3+ years in commercial underwriting or broader commercial insurance
• Strong NZ commercial insurance market understanding
• Excellent relationship-building and negotiation skills
• Customer-first mindset with focus on quality outcomes
• Commercial awareness and sales principles understanding
• Strong collaboration across teams and stakeholders
• Proactive problem solving, innovation and continuous improvement
• Tertiary and/or relevant industry qualifications are highly regarded

Responsibilities

• Make informed underwriting decisions to support profitable, sustainable growth.
• Review existing SME commercial business and support renewal propositions.
• Quote and help secure new SME commercial opportunities.
• Build strong relationships with intermediaries and business partners.
• Deliver a smooth, efficient experience for commercial customers and partners.
• Collaborate across the wider Business team and drive strong outcomes.
• Support digitisation, automation and continuous improvement initiatives.
