Technical Recruitment Solutions in Hamilton, North Island, is seeking a Service Technician for scientific and environmental instrumentation. The role involves field work across NZ, with travel required and a company car provided for on-road tasks.

You’ll install, service and repair monitoring equipment, manage data sites, and generate client reports. A trade qualification and practical electronics skills are valued.

Responsibilities

• Install, commission, service and repair equipment at client sites across NZ.
• Maintain data collection sites including telemetry networks.
• Gaugings of rivers and streams and data processing for reports.
• Update site files, records and documentation during/after visits.
• Manage time, resources and tools on the road with vehicle readiness.
• Liaise with customers on-site and build strong relationships.
• Record hours, kilometres, and expenses promptly and accurately.
• Provide technical advice and quoting support to internal staff.
• Maintain high workmanship standards and safety compliance.

Service Technician - Scientific & Environmental Equipment / Instrumentation

This is a field-based technical role with a company that installs, services, and maintains high quality scientific and industrial instrumentation. Think environmental monitoring, geothermal, climate, atmosphere, hydrology, building, structural, geotechnical and similar systems - work that actually matters to science and the environment.

You'll be on the road regularly - this is genuine field work across New Zealand. Away up to two weeks out of every four, with flexible arrangements around time in the office. Projects span a huge range of clients and sectors, and no two weeks look the same. If you want a desk job, this isn't it. What you'll be doing

• Installing, commissioning, servicing, and repairing measurement and environmental monitoring and control equipment at client sites across NZ
• Installation and maintenance and fault resolution of data collection sites - including climate, surface and groundwater, and telemetry networks ranging from single sites to large multi-site systems
• River and stream gaugings
• Data processing, reduction, and preparation of reports for internal use and directly to customers
• Updating and maintaining accurate site files, job records, and documentation during and after every visit
• Managing your own time, resources, and tools on the road - including vehicle and equipment readiness
• Liaising with customers on-site, keeping them informed and building strong working relationships
• Logging hours, kilometres, job costs, and credit card purchases promptly and accurately
• Supporting internal staff with technical advice, quoting assistance, and peer review
• Working to a high standard of workmanship and taking personal responsibility for getting things right the first time
• Adhering to health and safety requirements and company systems

What we're looking for

Background and qualifications are flexible - what matters most is your attitude and aptitude. Trade qualified candidates have done very well in this team. Think electricians, electronics technicians, or anyone who has spent time servicing equipment in the field. Backgrounds in farming, medical equipment servicing, avionics, commercial AV, or similar technical service roles can be a strong fit.

• A genuine interest in science and the environment - the clients you'll be working with live and breathe this stuff
• Strong practical problem-solving skills - the ability to think on your feet and figure things out
• Excellent organisation - when your next site is 600km away, forgetting something isn't an option
• Good communication skills and confidence with customers, including at a corporate level
• A "Kiwi attitude" - practical, down to earth, reliable, and collaborative
• A clean full driver's licence
• Physical fitness - this is active outdoor work in all conditions
• A willingness to travel regularly and stay away from home as part of the role
• Good computer skills and the ability to produce professional documentation
• Confidence with basic electronics and electrical diagnostics - a multimeter should be second nature

Nice to have but not essential: a trade or technical qualification in an electrical, electronic, or applied science field (EST or EAS registration is advantageous).
