Job summary

Transpower New Zealand is seeking an experienced power system dynamics engineer to model and analyse grid stability and HVDC interactions. You will develop tools and studies for planning future grid needs and contribute to investment proposals for HVDC and reactive plant upgrades.

The role involves collaborating with the Grid Development team to deliver technically rigorous insights, improve modelling frameworks, and promote standards and best practices across the electricity system.

Qualifications

• 4+ years' experience in dynamic modelling of power systems.
• Experience with, or understanding of, FACTS/HVDC control systems engineering.
• Python scripting.
• Well-developed ability to communicate technical information verbally and in writing with a wide range of stakeholders.
• Postgraduate study such as a master's or PhD would be advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Model and analyse power system behaviour to support the stable, long-term operation of the grid, including HVDC and dynamic reactive plant contexts.
• Develop frameworks, tools, models, and analysis for specialist power system studies, including stability and power quality.
• Contribute to Grid Upgrade Plans for HVDC and dynamic reactive plant investment proposals.
• Provide technical expertise across HVDC, reactive power control, power electronics, and control systems, supporting requirements, design, analysis, and project implementation.
• Develop and refine policies, standards, and operating procedures.
• Evaluate emerging grid technologies for use on the New Zealand power system.
