Job summary

ConnectYou is seeking a Senior Substation Design Engineer to lead detailed HV substation design across transmission, distribution and renewable energy projects in New Zealand. You will deliver designs from concept through construction support, mentor junior engineers and drafters, and collaborate with clients, Transpower and contractors to ensure safe, compliant, and cost-effective outcomes.

Qualifications

• Senior-level experience in substation design at a lines company, consultancy or EPC.
• Detailed design experience on HV substation projects through to construction.
• Strong working knowledge of New Zealand regulations, joint AS/NZS standards and Transpower or lines company design requirements.

Responsibilities

• Carry out detailed primary and/or secondary substation design for new builds, upgrades and connections (11kV to 220kV).
• Prepare and check design deliverables including single line diagrams, general arrangements, earthing, lightning protection, cable schedules, and protection & control schematics.
• Carry out engineering studies and calculations such as earthing, insulation coordination, cable sizing, AC/DC auxiliary systems and protection settings.
• Ensure designs meet NZ regulations and standards and safety in design principles.
• Manage design packages to scope, schedule and budget.
• Collaborate with clients, Transpower, vectors and contractors on technical and connection requirements.
• Review work of junior engineers and drafters and provide guidance.
• Contribute to tenders, proposals and cost estimates.
• Support construction and commissioning including RFIs and reviewing as-built documentation.
• Help improve design standards, tools and processes.
