Job summary

Canstaff is seeking an experienced Fitter Turner for Napier to join a specialist engineering and maintenance team. The role covers workshop machining and on-site maintenance, focusing on large, one-off or small-batch items rather than high-volume production.

The successful candidate will be trade-qualified, proficient with manual lathes and mills, and able to work independently with minimal supervision. Overtime and weekend breakdown support are expected.

Qualifications

• Trade-qualified Fitter Turner preferred.
• Strong experience with manual lathes and mills.
• Solid understanding of speeds, feeds, tolerances, and fits.
• Proven maintenance experience preferred.
• Confident working independently without close supervision.
• Clear English communication skills.
• Full NZ driver's licence (ability to drive company vehicles).
• Comfortable working at heights; confined space experience preferred.
• Own full set of basic hand and battery tools (required on day one).

Responsibilities

• Manual machining using lathes and mills
• Calculating and applying correct speeds and feeds
• Maintenance, repair, and breakdown work
• On-site work following instructions and solving problems independently
• Working with bearings, fits, tolerances, and general mechanical assemblies
• Occasional work at height and in confined spaces
• Participation in overtime and weekend breakdown coverage
