Job summary

University of Waikato is building a new enterprise data platform and seeks a Senior Data Engineer to design, build and operate production data pipelines. You will lead complex ingestion, integration and migration work, connecting data from university systems and back to consuming applications.

You will mentor peers, shape engineering standards and help evolve AI-assisted development approaches while delivering secure, scalable cloud data solutions on modern platforms.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of data engineering experience building production cloud data pipelines.
• Strong SQL and Python skills, including incremental ingestion and change data capture.
• Experience with DataOps, including Git, CI/CD, automated testing and secure data solutions.
• Experience with modern cloud data platforms such as Databricks, Microsoft Fabric or Snowflake, data modelling and complex data integration or migration.
• Proven mentoring skills and openness to AI-assisted development tools.
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and operate production data pipelines bringing data from source systems into the platform.
• Lead complex data ingestion, integration and legacy data warehouse migration work.
• Build reliable, secure and scalable data solutions to support evolving university data needs.
• Apply modern data engineering practices with incremental ingestion, CDC and automated testing.
• Mentor and coach other engineers, promote best practices and peer review.
