Job summary

Westpac New Zealand Ltd. is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to lead design and delivery of data solutions within our squad, mentoring others and ensuring robust, compliant service delivery.

You will work with business stakeholders to translate needs into scalable data architectures and maintain strong partnerships across technology teams. You will bring 5+ years in data or platform engineering, deep Hadoop/ Spark stack, Airflow orchestration, and secure SDLC practices, with Agile/DevOps

Qualifications

• 5+ years in data engineering, platform engineering or related technical discipline.
• Solid understanding of CDC and data streaming patterns.
• Awareness of secure software development practices for handling sensitive data.
• Experience with Terraform, CI/CD pipelines and containerisation.
• Demonstrated ability to assess new technologies and vendor solutions and recommend improvements.
• Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues across the application lifecycle.
• Strong QA, testing framework knowledge and drive for continuous improvement.
• Tertiary qualification in CS/IS/Engineering or related field; professional certifications preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor, support and grow engineers.
• Comfortable working in Agile delivery and modern DevOps environments.

Responsibilities

• Provide mentorship and guidance to engineers within the squad.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure high levels of service delivery and risk/compliance focus.
• Design and deliver scalable data architectures and banking product data solutions.
• Evaluate new technologies and vendor solutions and recommend improvements.
• Diagnose and resolve complex technical issues across the application lifecycle.
• Promote quality assurance and continuous improvement within the team.

The Senior Data Engineer not only provides expert domain knowledge and expertise in the area they are working in, but as a senior member of the squad, provides mentorship and guidance to others. They operate with greater scope within the service group, wider technology business unit and with business stakeholders to ensure high levels of Service Delivery are maintained and an overarching focus on risk and compliance is always front of mind in the squad. Communication, negotiation, collaboration and teamwork, and partnership/relationship building skills are key to achieving desired outcomes in this role. In particular to enable the delivery of great innovative banking products that continue to enhance our customers’ experience.

• Good at the Hadoop stack, particularly HDFS and Spark.


• Experience orchestrating data workflows with Airflow.


• 5+ years of experience in data engineering, platform engineering, or a related technical discipline.

• Tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related discipline, with relevant technical certifications preferred.


• Demonstrated ability to mentor, support and grow engineers.


• Comfortable in Agile delivery and modern DevOps practices.
