Job summary

XE, a global payments and FX platform, is expanding its Christchurch/Auckland-based backend team. This hands-on senior role focuses on building reliable backend systems, APIs, and data flows that underlie cross-border payments and multi-currency support.

You'll collaborate with product, compliance, and operations, adopting AI-assisted development tools and modernCloud practices to modernise our platform. Hybrid work options available in NZ.

Qualifications

• Strong backend software engineering experience in production environments.
• Solid experience with C#/.NET or other OO backend languages (Java, Kotlin, Go).
• Good SQL and relational database fundamentals.
• Experience designing and building APIs, services, and integrations.
• Strong understanding of system design and architecture.
• Experience with service-oriented, microservices, or event-driven systems.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and own backend services supporting payments, FX, onboarding, settlement, KYC/KYB, and multi-currency flows.
• Develop APIs, integrations, and service layers used across XE’s platform.
• Work with AWS and cloud deployment practices.
• Contribute to CI/CD, automated testing, and production readiness.
• Lead design reviews and contribute to architecture decisions.
• Mentor intermediate engineers and raise engineering standards.
