XE supports consumers and businesses across New Zealand, Australia, the UK, Canada, and the US, helping them collect, convert, hold, and send money across international markets. The business has global scale through Euronet Worldwide, but the team is still small enough for engineers to have real ownership, influence, and visibility across the work they deliver.
This is a hands-on senior backend engineering role working on the services, APIs, data flows, integrations, and production systems that support XE’s cross-border payments products.
You’ll be joining XE during a key stage of technology growth and platform modernisation. The business is rebuilding core platform capability across corporate and consumer products, and the NZ team is playing an important role in that work.
You’ll work closely with product, compliance, operations, architects, team leads, and other engineers to turn complex requirements into reliable, well-designed backend systems. The role is internal-facing rather than client-facing, but you’ll need to communicate clearly, contribute to technical decisions, and help raise engineering standards within your domain.
XE is also moving strongly into AI-assisted engineering. Tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar are part of how the team builds, tests, documents, and ships software. This role will suit someone who is already using AI tools in a practical way, or who has a strong view on how they can be used responsibly in modern software delivery.
You’ll be involved in:
You do not need to tick every box, but you will likely bring:
Experience in payments, foreign exchange, banking, fintech, insurance, or another regulated environment would be useful, but it is not essential.
Experience with ledgers, financial data systems, partner integrations, platform migrations, caching tools such as Redis or Memcached, Jira, Confluence, Postman, or Bruno would also be valuable.
This is a strong opportunity for a senior backend engineer who wants:
The role is based in XE’s Christchurch or Auckland office with a hybrid working model. Alternatively, there is an option to work out of the Auckland office in a hybrid arrangement also.
You’ll work with local colleagues as well as global teams across XE’s wider technology function. Because XE operates internationally, there may occasionally be calls or collaboration with teams in other regions.
