Job summary

XE is expanding its Christchurch or Auckland engineering team and seeks a Senior Back End Engineer to modernise the payments and FX platform. You will own backend services, design APIs, and contribute to platform modernisation with a strong focus on reliability and production readiness.

You’ll work with product, compliance, and operations, mentoring engineers and shaping technical direction. Experience with AI-assisted development tools is a plus.

Qualifications

• Strong backend software engineering experience in production environments.
• Solid experience with C#/.NET, or another OO backend language (Java/Kotlin/Go).
• Good SQL and relational database fundamentals.
• Experience designing and building APIs, services, and integrations.
• Strong understanding of system design and architecture.

Responsibilities

• Designing, building, and owning backend services that support payments, FX, onboarding, settlement, KYC/KYB, and multi-currency flows.
• Developing APIs, integrations, and service layers used across XE’s platform.
• Working with AWS and related backend technologies.
• Contributing to CI/CD, deployment practices, automated testing, and production readiness.
• Owning production health across your domain, including reliability and observability.
