Job summary

Placements24 seeks a Remote Senior Environmental Scientist to bolster its environmental compliance team in the mining sector. Lead EIAs, develop EMPs, monitor regulatory compliance, and advise on SA environmental laws from a remote location.

The role requires 7–10 years in environmental management, a Master’s or PhD, and strong reporting and stakeholder skills. Remote work flexibility and professional registration are preferred.

Qualifications

• Master's or PhD in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or related discipline.
• 7–10 years of experience in environmental management with focus on mining.
• Experience conducting EIAs, developing EMPs, and managing environmental compliance in South Africa.
• Strong knowledge of South African environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks.
• Experience with environmental monitoring techniques and data analysis.
• Excellent project management and report-writing skills.
• Strong communication, interpersonal and stakeholder engagement abilities.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities remotely.
• Professional registration with a relevant body (e.g., EAPASA) is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and manage Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) for mining projects.
• Conduct Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and prepare regulatory reports.
• Monitor environmental performance across mining sites for permits and standards.
• Advise on South African environmental legislation, including NEMA.
• Oversee environmental monitoring: water, air, noise, biodiversity.
• Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions.
• Collaborate with operations, engineering, and legal teams for integrated planning.
• Provide training on environmental matters to site personnel and management.
• Stay updated on evolving regulations and manage external consultants as needed.
• Prepare high-quality compliance reports for regulators and internal stakeholders.
