About the Role

Our client, a leading innovator in sustainable mining practices , is seeking a highly qualified Remote Senior Environmental Scientist to bolster their environmental compliance team. This is a fully remote position, offering the flexibility to work from anywhere, though an understanding of South African environmental legislation is key. You will be responsible for ensuring that all mining operations adhere to stringent environmental regulations, developing and implementing environmental management plans, and conducting impact assessments. This role is critical in upholding our client's commitment to environmental stewardship throughout the lifecycle of their mining projects. This position requires a proactive approach to environmental management and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by the mining sector .

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) for various mining projects.
• Conduct Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and compile relevant reports for regulatory submission.
• Monitor environmental performance across mining sites, ensuring compliance with permits, legislation, and company standards.
• Interpret and advise on the application of South African environmental legislation, including the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) and its associated regulations.
• Oversee environmental monitoring programs, including water quality, air quality, noise, and biodiversity assessments.
• Investigate and report on environmental incidents, developing and implementing corrective actions.
• Collaborate with site operations, engineering, and legal teams to integrate environmental considerations into project planning and execution.
• Provide technical expertise and training on environmental matters to site personnel and management.
• Stay updated on evolving environmental legislation, best practices, and emerging environmental issues relevant to the mining industry .Manage external consultants and environmental service providers as required.
• Prepare high-quality technical and compliance reports for regulatory bodies and internal stakeholders, working remotely from Queenstown, Eastern Cape or any designated location.

Requirements

• Master's degree or Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or a related discipline.
• A minimum of 7-10 years of experience in environmental management, with a significant focus on the mining sector .
• Proven experience in conducting EIAs, developing EMPs, and managing environmental compliance in South Africa.
• In-depth knowledge of South African environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks.
• Experience with environmental monitoring techniques and data analysis.
• Strong project management and report writing skills.
