Job summary

Whānau Āwhina Plunket is hiring a Registered Nurse to support South Canterbury communities (Timaru, Fairlie, Tekapo) in a permanent 0.6FTE role. You will visit whānau in homes and clinics, with some care delivered via video conference, to promote pēpi health and development.

You will work with whānau, tamariki, and health services, building trusting relationships and delivering high-quality, culturally safe care across Te Waipounamu.

Qualifications

• Be a Registered Nurse.
• Hold or be able to obtain an Annual Practising Certificate.
• Hold a full clean NZ Drivers Licence.
• Hold a Post Graduate Certificate in Well Child Tamariki ora or be committed to completing 12-month Post Graduate Certificate in Well Child Tamariki ora.

Responsibilities

• Meet whānau across South Canterbury through home and clinic visits and via video conference.
• Assess the growth and development of tamariki and advise on care.
• Deliver some care via video conference across Te Waipounamu.
• Foster trusting relationships with whānau and provide supportive care in a culturally safe environment.

2026 is your year to harness your workday and make a difference by helping every Plunket baby to have the best start. Join us as a Registered Nurse working across the South Canterbury region (Timaru, Fairlie and Tekapo). This is a permanent 0.6FTE role.

Pay rates for our Registered Nurses are between $66,222 per annum ($33.51 per hour) to $94,842 per annum ($48.00 per hour) depending on experience.

Join Plunket’s passionate team and help give every pēpi the best start in life. You’ll work alongside whānau, tamariki, and other health and social services, making a real difference every single day.

Plunket Nurses assess the growth and development of tamariki and are trusted clinical advisors who walk alongside whānau.

You will meet with whānau across South Canterbury doing home and clinic visits and you will deliver some care by video conference across Te Waipounamu. You will foster trusting relationships in the community by adopting an approach to care where whānau feel connected, included, safe and supported to get what they need. Working alongside a highly motivated and experienced team you'll be committed to delivering engaging care where whānau have a safe space to share parenting challenges and celebrate successes.

Working in the community during a cost-of-living crisis means you will undoubtedly meet whānau who are facing significant challenges. Our clinical responsibilities co-exist with the need to deliver social support to ensure pēpi are being raised in safe and healthy homes. We offer 6–12-week orientation depending on experience with ongoing preceptor support to help you find your feet.

Community Nursing requires a particular set of skills, you may start the day with 5 whānau booked in for visits, one might need to cancel, another might be late, and the last appointment might present significant concerns and take longer than anticipated. So, you will need to be resourceful, resilient and comfortable making decisions to ensure we maintain a high-quality experience and minimise risks for our clients.

We are confident we can give you great support with our experienced team - so we are open to both new graduates and experienced nurses.

It is vital that you enjoy working with pēpi, however most of your interactions will be with caregivers. To deliver the right support, you'll need to have exceptional active listening skills and be able to ask questions tactfully. Working with whānau from all walks of life will require you to be able to build trust and communicate effectively with different people.

To Be Successful In This Role, You Will

• Be a Registered Nurse
• Hold or be able to obtain an Annual Practicing Certificate

• Have a Post Graduate Certificate in Well Child Tamariki ora or be committed to completing 12-month Post Graduate Certificate in Well Child Tamariki ora (we would cover the costfor this)
