Based near Auckland Airport, this full-time role emphasizes cost control, efficiency and cross-functional coordination with clients, engineers and suppliers across the project lifecycle.

Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in Quantity Surveying and Construction Management.
  • Professional knowledge of cost estimation, budgeting and contract administration.
  • Experience in NZ construction industry preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare cost estimates, budgets and financial reporting for projects.
  • Negotiate and administer contracts with suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Monitor expenditure and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Provide cost estimates and updates to project stakeholders throughout the lifecycle.
  • Review drawings for cost efficiency and procurement accuracy.
  • Prepare bills of materials and procurement schedules.
  • Support tendering processes and evaluate bids.

We're seeking an experienced, detail-oriented and proactive Quantity Surveyor to join our dynamic team.

As a QS at Formsteel, you will be responsible for managing the financial aspects of construction projects, ensuring budgets are adhered to and costs are controlled. This is a full-time position based at our office near Auckland Airport. You will play a vital role in the successful execution, efficiency and coordination of our construction projects. This full-time position offers the opportunity to contribute to the strategic goals of our rapidly growing business.

Role Overview

The successful applicant will be responsible for the measurement, costing, and procurement aspects of our projects. This includes preparing detailed bill of materials from plans and drawings, supporting tendering processes, and assisting in the evaluation of contractor bids. The successful candidate will play a vital role in ensuring cost efficiency, procurement accuracy, and transparency across all projects.

Core responsibilities
  • Preparing and analysing cost estimates, budgets and financial reporting
  • Negotiating and administering contracts with suppliers and subcontractors
  • Monitoring project expenditure and identifying cost-saving opportunities
  • Providing cost estimates, advice, support and updates to core personal regarding project deliverables
  • Liaising with clients, contractors, engineers and other stakeholders to manage contract administration, and reporting throughout the project lifecycle
  • Developing scope of work documents aligned with project requirements, while maintaining detailed records and documentation
  • Reviewing architectural, structural, and engineering drawings with accuracy and diligence
  • Preparing bill of materials and schedules for use in procurement and project budgeting
  • Issuing tender packages to subcontractors and suppliers, ensuring clarity and completeness
  • Collect, analyse, and compare quotations/tenders to support informed procurement decisions
  • Liaising with project managers, engineers, suppliers, and subcontractors to ensure cost and scope alignment
  • Maintaining accurate records of quantities, pricing, and procurement activities and reporting throughout the project lifecycle
What we’re looking for
  • A degree or diploma in Quantity Surveying and Construction Management
  • A certificate in Commercial contracting management and cost engineering
  • A minimum 4 years' experience in quantity surveying, estimating, or procurement across the New Zealand construction industry
  • A strong understanding of construction methodologies as well as the ability to interpret drawings and specifications
  • An excellent understanding of construction cost estimation, budgeting, and contract administration
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in using quantity surveying software and MS Office suite
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, under pressure deadlines
  • Keen attention to detail and a proactive approach to cost management
  • Prior experience in estimating would be an advantage
