Job summary

Our client is a product development and engineering company in Queenstown, NZ, specialising in model kits, collectibles and OEM products. They are seeking a Mechanical/Mechatronics Engineer with 2–3 years in product development to support projects from concept through production.

You will read CAD models, review BOMs, coordinate with external designers and overseas manufacturers, verify mold layouts, and ensure designs meet safety and manufacturing standards.

Qualifications

• 2–3 years of experience in product development, product engineering, NPI, mechanical design, or manufacturing engineering.
• Ability to read and interpret 3D CAD models and engineering drawings (STEP, STL, OBJ).
• Knowledge of BOMs, materials selection, prototyping, and DFM.

Responsibilities

• Understand client requirements and project specifications to support product development activities.
• Gather and review technical information including model kits, blueprints, photographs, product functions, and design references.
• Coordinate with external 2D/3D designers, freelancers, and sound engineers throughout the product development process.
• Liaise with overseas manufacturing partners to communicate technical requirements and resolve engineering queries.
• Provide factories with the necessary technical information to support 3D modelling and reverse engineering activities.
• Define material specifications and verify BOMs.
• Ensure designs comply with safety regulations and engineering standards.
• Review 3D CAD files (STEP, STL, OBJ) for mechanisms and assemblies.
• Evaluate prototypes, identify issues, and recommend engineering solutions.
• Review mold layouts to ensure manufacturability.
• Inspect pre-production and production samples and propose design/quality improvements.
• Assist in reviewing QC inspection reports to ensure specifications are met.

The Job

• Understand client requirements and project specifications to support product development activities.
• Gather and review technical information, including model kits, blueprints, photographs, product functions, and design references.
• Coordinate with external 2D/3D designers, freelancers, and sound engineers throughout the product development process.
• Liaise with overseas manufacturing partners to communicate technical requirements and resolve engineering queries.

• Define appropriate material specifications and verify Bills of Materials (BOM).
• Ensure product designs comply with applicable safety regulations and engineering standards.
• Review and validate 3D CAD files (e.g. STEP, STL, OBJ), ensuring mechanisms, assemblies, and product functionality meet design requirements.
• Evaluate prototypes, identify technical issues, and recommend engineering solutions where required.
• Review mold layouts, including injection gates and parting lines, to ensure manufacturability.
• Inspect pre-production and production samples, providing recommendations for design and quality improvements.
• Assist in reviewing quality control (QC) inspection reports to ensure products meet required specifications.
• Work closely with internal teams and clients to support project execution and successful product delivery.

The Talent

• Diploma or Degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electronics Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
• 2-3 years of relevant experience in product development, product engineering, NPI, mechanical design, or manufacturing engineering.
• Ability to read and interpret 3D CAD models and engineering drawings (e.g. STEP, STL, OBJ).
• Basic understanding of product development processes, Bills of Materials (BOM), material selection, prototyping, and Design for Manufacturing (DFM).
• Knowledge of plastic injection molding and mold layouts will be an advantage.
• Exposure to electro-mechanical products or consumer products incorporating mechanical and electronic components (e.g. PCB, LEDs, speakers, motors) is preferred.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and project coordination skills.
• Proficient in spoken English and Mandarin to liaise with Chinese-speaking manufacturing partners and suppliers in China.
• Able to manage multiple projects and work effectively.
