A great opportunity has arisen to join a successful New Zealand-owned design and manufacturing business specialising in bespoke engineering solutions.

With a strong pipeline of work and continued growth, we're looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer who enjoys solving problems, thinking beyond the obvious and turning ideas into practical, manufacturable solutions.

This is very much a hands-on design engineering role within a collaborative team. You'll work across a variety of bespoke projects, with plenty of opportunity to contribute ideas and see your designs come to life in the workshop.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the General Manager, you'll work closely with sales, production and the wider engineering team to develop preliminary and functional concepts into detailed designs for manufacture and installation.

You'll manage multiple projects at different stages, producing accurate designs and drawings while working collaboratively to solve the technical and practical challenges that come with bespoke manufacturing.

Key responsibilities include

• Producing detailed manufacturing drawings and 3D models using SolidWorks.
• Developing preliminary and functional concepts into practical, detailed designs.
• Applying sound mechanical engineering principles and creative thinking to solve design challenges.
• Managing multiple concurrent projects through the design lifecycle.
• Undertaking site visits and gathering information to support design, manufacture and installation.
• Preparing bills of materials and researching and specifying non-standard components.
• Working closely with the workshop to ensure designs are practical and manufacturable.
• Troubleshooting design and manufacturing issues as they arise.
• Contributing ideas to improve existing designs, systems and design efficiencies.
• Collaborating with other designers and sharing knowledge across the team.

About You

• You'll be an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer who enjoys the practical side of engineering and gets satisfaction from seeing something you've designed actually being manufactured.

Ideally, you'll bring:

• A Mechanical Engineering degree or equivalent industry experience.
• Approximately 5-10+ years' design engineering experience within manufacturing or a related industry.
• Strong SolidWorks capability and experience producing detailed manufacturing drawings.
• Experience in sheet metal fabrication, industrial equipment, dust and fume extraction or adjacent manufacturing environments would be highly regarded.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to think outside the box and develop practical solutions.
• An energetic, proactive approach and willingness to get involved.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with sales, design, manufacturing and installation teams.
• The ability to manage your own workload while contributing positively to a wider team.

Leadership experience is not essential. There may be opportunities to take on greater responsibility over time, but the priority is finding a strong design engineer who enjoys being hands-on and contributing as part of a capable team.

New Zealand residency or citizenship is essential.
