Job summary

SPCA Hamilton East is seeking a reliable casual Op Shop Assistant to help run the shop, greet customers, process donations and merchandise stock. You’ll cover shifts on an as-required basis, including weekends, to support leave periods and peak times.

Join a team focused on animal welfare and community support. You’ll work independently at times, while collaborating with volunteers, with a friendly, hands-on approach to sales, stock processing and displays.

Qualifications

• At least 1 year of retail experience.
• Casual on-call availability, including weekends.
• Ability to work independently when sole charge.
• Hands-on customer service, stock processing and merchandising.
• Good organisation, reliability and communication.
• Physical fitness to lift and move donated goods.
• Confidence with POS systems and basic computer applications.
• Genuine interest in SPCA's animal welfare work.

Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE

At SPCA, our Op Shops do more than offer great second‑hand finds – they help fund the care and protection of animals across New Zealand. Every purchase and donation helps us give animals in need a better life.

We’re looking for a reliable and enthusiastic Casual Op Shop Assistant to join our Hamilton Eastteam. You’ll help keep the shop running smoothly, from welcoming customers and processing donations to merchandising stock and supporting our volunteers.

Hours will be offered on a casual, as‑required basis to cover leave, busy periods and weekends, so flexibility and availability are important.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Take responsibility for daily shop operations when working sole charge.
• Receive, sort, price and merchandise donated goods.
• Provide friendly, helpful service to customers and donors.
• Process sales and manage cash handling accurately.
• Keep the shop clean, safe, organised and well presented.
• Replenish stock and create appealing displays.
• Help provide cover and basic team supervision when required.

You’re practical, dependable and enjoy working in a busy retail environment. You’re comfortable taking initiative, working independently and getting stuck into whatever needs doing. Just as importantly, you’re happy to pitch in wherever you’re needed!

What we’re looking for:

• At least 1 year of retail experience is essential, with charity retail experience an advantage.
• Flexibility to work on call and at short notice, including weekends.
• Confidence working independently and taking responsibility for shop operations when working sole charge.
• A hands‑on approach to customer service, sales, stock processing and merchandising.
• The ability to work well with a team of staff and volunteers.
• Good organisation, reliability and communication skills.
• Physical fitness to sort, lift and move donated goods and stock.
• Confidence using POS systems, email and basic computer applications.
• A genuine interest in supporting SPCA's animal welfare work.
