Job summary

Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children in Dunedin is hiring for a night-shift residential care role based at Te Pae Tawhiti. You'll provide overnight care and supervision for tamariki and rangatahi, ensuring safety and wellbeing across the night on a fortnightly schedule.

You'll join a dedicated team, work in a trauma-informed, child-centred environment and contribute to care planning, documentation, and responsive support while aligning with tikanga Māori and te reo Māori values.

Qualifications

• Resilience, initiative and a proactive approach with a positive outlook.
• Empathy, patience and ability to see past what someone may be struggling with.
• A tertiary education within psychology, social sciences, social work, sports, music, arts or teaching (beneficial but not required).
• Life experience and understanding of what rangatahi may be going through.
• Flexibility to work different shifts - mornings, evenings, weekends and public holidays. Availability throughout the Christmas and New Year period is desired.
• Experience working with rangatahi and tamariki.
• Sound judgement with the ability to manage risk and make tough decisions.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adapt to your audience.
• Understanding and confidence in tikanga Māori and te reo Māori

Responsibilities

• Ensuring that a safe and secure environment is maintained for the benefit of the rangatahi, staff and the community
• Provide overnight care and supervision for tamariki and rangatahi in a residential care setting, ensuring their safety, wellbeing, and security throughout the night.
• Support positive outcomes for young people by role modelling respectful behaviour, building positive relationships, and responding appropriately to challenging situations.
• Maintain a safe and supportive environment by monitoring residents, identifying and managing risks, and following all health, safety, and care requirements.
• Work collaboratively with a dedicated team, sharing information, documenting incidents and observations, and contributing to care planning and residential operations.
