Job summary

Wellington Electricity in Upper Hutt seeks a Network Development Senior Engineer to lead long- and short-term network planning, perform advanced modelling and advise on capital investment. You will mentor engineers, shape the Asset Management Plan and ensure regulatory compliance while delivering a safe, reliable energy network.

The role demands 7+ years in electricity distribution, expertise in load forecasting and power system analysis, and strong stakeholder engagement.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years’ experience in electricity distribution, including network planning, asset management, engineering or network design.
  • Advanced capability in load forecasting, power system analysis and network modelling using DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
  • Strong analytical skills to identify network risks, assess options and develop practical solutions.
  • Knowledge of electricity industry regulations, planning standards and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Commercial acumen with experience developing business cases, evaluating investments and supporting capital planning.
  • Proven leadership, mentoring and stakeholder engagement skills at all levels.
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, with CPEng status or progress towards professional registration highly regarded.

The Opportunity

The Network Development Senior Engineer is a key technical leadership role within our Asset Planning team.

In this role, you'll help shape the future development of Wellington Electricity's network through strategic planning, technical analysis and network investment decision making. You'll play a leading role in forecasting future network requirements, identifying network constraints, developing practical solutions, supporting long term asset performance, and meeting regulatory requirements.

Alongside your technical expertise, you'll provide mentoring and guidance to engineers across the business, helping build capability within the team while supporting the delivery of a safe, reliable and future ready network.

What You'll be Doing

In the Network Development Senior Engineer role with Wellington Electricity, you will:

Lead the development of short and long-term network plans to support growth, reliability and future customer needs.

Undertake advanced network modelling, load forecasting and technical analysis to inform strategic investment decisions.

Identify network limitations and develop technically sound and commercially viable reinforcement solutions.

Develop concept briefs and capital project high-level budgets for Network augmentationprojects for contribution towards the annual CAPEX budget.

Lead key planning documents including the Asset Management Plan, Network Development Plan and annual capital programme in addition to other planning related regulatory compliance requirements.

Lead the development of business cases, project recommendations and long-term capital investment plans for the network.

Provide specialist advice on major customer connections, distributed generation, EV infrastructure and emerging technologies.

Support regulatory compliance requirements, network standards development and asset management planning activities.

Mentor and support engineers across the business, helping develop technical capability and leadership within the team.

About You

We're looking for an experienced and forward-thinking engineer who combines strong technical expertise with leadership capability and a passion for developing people.

To succeed in this role, you'll bring:

7+ years’ experience within electricity distribution, including network planning, asset management, engineering or network design.

Advanced capability in load forecasting, power system analysis and network modelling using tools such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory.

Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify network risks, assess options and develop practical solutions.

Knowledge of electricity industry regulations, planning standards and regulatory compliance requirements.

Commercial acumen with experience developing business cases, evaluating investments and supporting capital planning.

Proven leadership, mentoring and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence outcomes at all levels.

A degree in Electrical Engineering, with CPEng (Chartered Professional Engineer) status or progress towards professional registration being highly regarded.
