Job summary

Wellington Electricity in Upper Hutt is seeking a Network Development Engineer to shape the future of the network. You will help plan, develop and optimise the electricity network to support growth and ensure a safe, reliable supply.

The role blends strategic planning with technical analysis, influencing major investments, evaluating technologies and collaborating across internal and external partners.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years' experience in electricity distribution, transmission or related power systems.
  • Knowledge of network planning, asset management, power system analysis or engineering design.
  • Experience with load forecasting, network modelling and assessing network performance.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to evaluate technical and commercial considerations.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

  • Develop short- and long-term plans to support growth, reliability and resilience of Wellington Electricity's network.
  • Undertake load forecasting, network analysis and modelling to support investment and planning decisions.
  • Identify network constraints and develop practical solutions for future capacity and performance.
  • Contribute to planning documents including Asset Management Plan, Network Development Plan and capital programme.
  • Assess new customer connections and provide planning advice for diverse developments.
  • Prepare business cases and technical recommendations to support network investments.
  • Provide technical support and collaborate with operational, regulatory and commercial teams.

The Opportunity

The Network Development Engineer plays an important role in shaping the future of Wellington Electricity's network.

Working within our Asset Planning team, you'll be responsible for helping plan, develop and optimise the electricity network to support future growth, improve reliability, and ensure customers continue to receive a safe and resilient electricity supply.

This role combines strategic planning with technical analysis, giving you the opportunity to influence major network investment decisions, assess emerging technologies and customer connections, and contribute to the long-term development of Wellington's electricity infrastructure. You'll work closely with a range of internal stakeholders and industry partners, helping balance engineering, regulatory, commercial and customer requirements to deliver the best outcomes for our network and community

What You'll be Doing
  • Develop short- and long-term plans to support the growth, reliability and resilience of Wellington Electricity's network.
  • Undertake load forecasting, network analysis and modelling to support investment and planning decisions.
  • Identify network constraints and develop practical solutions to meet future capacity and performance requirements whilst considering budgets.
  • Contribute to key planning documents including the Asset Management Plan, Network Development Plan and annual capital programme in addition to other planning related regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Assess new customer connections including complex load integration and the incorporation of distributed energy resources, and provide network planning advice for residential, commercial and industrial developments.
  • Prepare business cases, project briefs and technical recommendations to support network investment decisions.
  • Provide technical support and work collaboratively with operational, regulatory and commercial teams to deliver network development initiatives.
About You

We're looking for a motivated and analytical engineer who enjoys solving complex challenges and thinking strategically about the future of electricity networks.

To succeed in this role, you'll bring:

  • 4+ years' experience working within an electricity distribution, transmission or related power systems environment.
  • Knowledge of network planning, asset management, power system analysis or engineering design.
  • Experience with load forecasting, network modelling and assessing network performance.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate technical and commercial considerations.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
  • A proactive and solutions focused approach, with the ability to balance strategic thinking and practical delivery.
  • A tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
