Job summary

Wellington Electricity in Upper Hutt invites applications for a Graduate Engineer. You will join small, specialised teams and complete a structured development programme to gain hands-on experience across power distribution engineering and asset management.

You will work with various stakeholders, develop load forecasts, assist with network modelling, and contribute to improving SAIDI/SAIFI metrics while staying aligned with the company’s goal to keep the lights on.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualifications in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or equivalent.
  • Good knowledge of electrical generation, transmission and distribution systems.
  • Strong interest in power systems, power engineering, and electricity distribution network operations.
  • Experience with common and advanced desktop applications relevant to power system analysis such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with the development and management of a large electrical distribution network that has long term customer growth, ageing assets and increasing demands and expectations from key stakeholder groups.
  • Undertake investigations into network performance and power quality issues.
  • Assist with calculation and reporting of network performance indices (e.g. SAIDI, SAIFI) and provide assistance with any other operational planning, analysis and reporting.
  • Contributing to projects that will be included in the annual asset management plan to ensure organisational strategic goals are achieved.
  • Obtaining network information and updating load forecasts and network models.

The Opportunity

As a Graduate Engineer at Wellington Electricity, you'll join small, specialised teams and follow a structured development programme designed to give you experience across our various engineering functions. The diversity of the work is aimed at giving the Graduate Engineer a solid grounding in power distribution engineering principles and the operation of an electricity distribution network. You will also work across other areas of the business and with a variety of people, so that you build a solid understanding of how the functions connect and how WE* keep the lights on.

In this Graduate Engineer role at Wellington Electricity your key responsibilities will include, but aren't limited to:
