Job summary

Far North District Council, Te Ahu Museum & Archives, Northland, NZ, seeks a Kaitautoko Whare Taonga - Museum Assistant for 0.50 FTE (20 hours/week) to support visitors, collections, exhibitions and research projects.

You will help keep our heritage accessible, welcome visitors, and contribute to the ongoing museum programmes within Te Tai Tokerau. Experience in museums or a willingness to learn is valued.

Qualifications

  • Customer service focus and confident in engaging with a wide range of people.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organisational and administrative abilities.
  • Experience or interest in collection handling, cataloguing, archives, or heritage collections.
  • Good computer literacy and confidence using information management systems.
  • Willingness to learn, take initiative, and support the wider team.
  • Appreciation of Te Ao Māori, tikanga Māori, and diverse communities.
  • Current New Zealand Driver Licence.
  • Positive attitude and commitment to delivering outstanding service.

Responsibilities

  • Delivering outstanding customer service and creating memorable visitor experiences.
  • Assisting with daily museum operations and administration.
  • Supporting collection cataloguing, documentation, and digitisation projects.
  • Undertaking research to enhance collection knowledge and museum programmes.
  • Assisting with exhibitions, education activities, and public enquiries.
  • Supporting the care, handling, rehousing, and storage of collection items.
  • Contributing to reporting, data collection, and project work.
  • Building positive relationships with visitors, stakeholders, volunteers, and community groups.

Te Wero – The Challenge

We're looking for an enthusiastic and community-minded Kaitautoko Whare Taonga - Museum Assistant to join the team at Te Ahu Museum & Archives in a 0.50 FTE position (20 hours per week). This is a varied and rewarding role where no two days are the same. You'll be at the heart of our museum operations, supporting visitors, assisting with collections and archives, contributing to exhibitions and research projects, and helping bring our region's unique stories to life.

As a key member of the team, you'll help ensure our collections remain accessible, our visitors feel welcome, and our museum continues to be a valued community resource.

Some of your responsibilities will include:

I ā koe - About You

You'll be someone who genuinely enjoys working with people and has a curiosity about history, heritage, museums, and the stories that shape our communities.

You may already have museum experience, be studying towards a relevant qualification, or be looking to further develop your career within the museum and heritage sector.

We're looking for someone who brings:

Essential Requirements
  • Hold a current clean full New Zealand Driver licence.
  • As this position includes visits to schools and work within facilities regularly accessed by children and young people, the successful applicant must be willing to undergo and pass a Ministry of Justice criminal history check and policy vetting process.
