Te Wero – The ChallengeFar North District Council is seeking a Museum Collections Specialist to join the team at Te Ahu Museum & Archives in a 0.60 FTE position (24 hours per week).
Reporting to the Manager of Te Ahu Museum & Archives, you'll play a vital role in the care, documentation, preservation, and accessibility of the museum's documentary heritage, archives, and taonga collections. Working closely with the Curator, you'll help ensure best-practice collection management while supporting research, exhibitions, loans, and public programmes.
This hands-on role offers the opportunity to work with significant heritage collections while helping connect our communities with their stories and history.
Key responsibilities include:
Preserving and caring for archive, heritage, and museum collections.
Creating, maintaining, and enhancing collection records within Vernon CMS.
Supporting acquisitions, accessioning, and collection development activities.
Facilitating community, visitor, and researcher access to collections.
Assisting with incoming and outgoing collection loans.
Preparing objects and collection information for exhibitions and public programmes.
Supporting volunteers and others working within collection spaces.
Contributing to the ongoing stewardship of one of the Far North's most significant cultural collections.
We’re looking for someone who brings:
A Museum diploma or other relevant degree.
3 – 5 years of experience in the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) sector
Knowledge of the Collection Management System (Vernon) and experience in cataloguing collections is highly desirable. Knowledge and understanding digital collections and digital outputs.
Having sound knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and He Whakaputanga, history and heritage of the communities in the Te Hiku o Te Ika region is important.
An understanding and commitment to tikanga Māori in daily practice and te reo Māori where appropriate to support meaningful engagement.
Prior experience packing and handling Museum collection items.
Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
Proficiency in digital technologies and a willingness to embrace innovation.
Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities in a dynamic work environment.
Hold a current clean full New Zealand Driver licence.
As this position includes visits to schools and work within facilities regularly accessed by children and young people, the successful applicant must be willing to undergo and pass a Ministry of Justice criminal history check and policy vetting process.

The salary for this position is Grade 14 within Council's salary structure (Band: $76,021 to $89,436 pro rata per annum) dependent on qualifications and experience, plus Kiwi Saver.
