Job summary

Kāpiti Coast District Council is seeking a Tractor Operator to join the Parks & Recreation mowing team in the Operations area. You will operate tractor-mounted decks, help maintain open spaces, and support service delivery across parks and reserves.

Ideal candidates will have practical parks experience, strong safety practices, and a valid NZ Driver Licence Class 1. This is a hands-on role reporting to the Team Leader Mowing with opportunities to contribute to community wellbeing.

Are you an experienced tractor mower operator with practical parks and recreation experience and a strong commitment to safe, high-quality work?

Come and join our Operations Team within Infrastructure Services, working as part of our Parks and Recreation mowing team.

We require a reliable Tractor Operator to carry out mowing across passive reserves, recreational areas and open spaces.

This is a fantastic opportunity to play a hands‑on role in maintaining public spaces that support recreation, wellbeing and community pride across the district.

In this key position, you will operate tractor‑mounted cutting decks and other mowing machinery, help maintain mowing schedules, respond promptly to service requests, complete required paperwork, and ensure plant and equipment is kept in safe working order.

You will report to the Team Leader Mowing and work alongside colleagues across the wider Operations Team. Together, you will help deliver agreed levels of service efficiently, safely and to a high standard for our residents, ratepayers, community groups and visitors.

Nā tōu rourou | What you will bring

To excel in this role, you will have extensive practical experience in a parks and recreation environment, strong skills operating tractor mowers and related machinery, and hold a current and valid NZ Driver Licence Class 1.

You’ll also bring strong knowledge of and experience in:

• Operating tractor‑mounted cutting decks, mower units, ride‑on mowers, pedestrian mowers, line trimmers, scrub bars safely and proficiently.
• Maintaining open spaces, public land and reserve areas efficiently and to agreed service levels.
• Working safely, identifying hazards, using appropriate PPE and following health and safety systems.
• Building effective working relationships and providing confident customer service to the public and stakeholders.
• Working both unsupervised and as part of a cooperative, collaborative team.

Ideally, you will also hold relevant heavy vehicle endorsements such as HT, Wheels or Rollers, a current GrowSafe Certificate and HSNO Approved Handler certification, and a current First Aid Certificate.
