Job summary

Hynds Pipe Systems Limited in Christchurch is seeking a hands-on Mechanical Technician to ensure the availability and reliability of on-site machinery. You'll perform planned and breakdown maintenance, fabricate and weld components, and diagnose faults to reduce downtime.

This role requires trade certification, welding experience (MIG/TIG/Arc), strong problem-solving, and the ability to work day and night shifts. NZ driver's license and safety-focused mindset are essential.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Plan and perform scheduled and breakdown maintenance on mechanical equipment.
• Fabrication and welding work (MIG, TIG, Arc) for production equipment.
• Operate workshop equipment such as lathe, mill and press.
• Fault finding and root-caue analysis to minimise breakdowns.
• Manage spare parts inventory and refurbishment.
• Support plant shutdowns and machinery isolation.
• Assist in developing SOPs and training operations teams.
• Maintain 5S housekeeping and support safety initiatives.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Job description

Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, you'll be responsible for the availability and reliability of all mechanical plant on site. This is a hands‑on role that combines planned maintenance, fabrication and welding, fault‑finding, and continuous improvement — with plenty of variety day to day.

What You'll Be Doing

• Planning and executing scheduled and breakdown maintenance on mechanical equipment
• Fabrication and welding work (Arc, MIG, TIG) including assembly of high‑specification production equipment
• Using workshop equipment including lathe, mill and press
• Fault‑finding and root cause analysis to minimise breakdowns and extend plant life
• Managing mechanical spare parts inventory and equipment refurbishment
• Supporting plant shutdowns and machinery isolation
• Assisting in the development of Standard Operating Procedures and training of operations teams
• Maintaining housekeeping standards and 5S practices
• Contributing to health and safety, cost control, and continuous improvement initiatives

What You'll Bring

• Qualified Mechanical Technician — Mechanical Trade Certificate or equivalent
• Proven maintenance fitter experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment
• Welding experience across MIG, TIG and Arc processes
• Strong fault‑finding and practical problem‑solving skills
• Familiarity with SOPs, 5S, and safe work practices
• Computer literacy and competent written and verbal English communication
• Full NZ Class 1 driver's licence
• Ability to work day and night shifts as required
• Physically capable of manual handling up to 20kg, working at heights and in confined spaces
