Job summary

OneStaff is seeking an experienced Maintenance Fitter or Maintenance Engineer to join a modern Hamilton manufacturing facility. This hands-on role focuses on keeping a highly automated, continuous production line reliable and safe, with a strong emphasis on fault-finding and proactive maintenance.

Ideal candidates will bring five years of maintenance experience in continuous manufacturing, strong mechanical skills, and practical knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, and PLC-controlled machinery.

Qualifications

  • Trade qualification in mechanical engineering or equivalent apprenticeship.
  • At least five years’ maintenance experience in continuous manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance across production equipment.
  • Respond to mechanical breakdowns and perform fault-finding and root cause analysis.
  • Maintain conveyors, rollers, chains, sprockets, shafts, gearboxes, bearings, pumps and drive systems.
  • Service hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including cylinders, valves and compressed-air equipment.
  • Complete welding and light fabrication and practical modifications where required.
  • Work safely around automated machinery and follow Lock Out/Tag Out procedures.
  • Record maintenance activity and support lubrication schedules and condition monitoring.
  • Partner with production teams, electricians and automation specialists to minimise downtime.
  • Contribute to reliability initiatives and continuous improvement across the site.

Job description

Our client is seeking an experienced Maintenance Fitter or Maintenance Engineer to join the team at a modern manufacturing facility in Hamilton. This is a hands‑on opportunity to maintain a highly automated, continuous production line and play a key role in maximising plant reliability, safety and uptime.

You will bring strong mechanical capability, sound electrical awareness and a practical approach to fault‑finding. Working closely with production staff and technical specialists, you will respond to breakdowns, complete planned maintenance and identify opportunities to improve equipment performance.

Key Responsibilities

In this varied role, you will:

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance, inspections and servicing across production equipment.
  • Respond quickly to mechanical breakdowns and complete effective fault‑finding and root cause analysis.
  • Maintain conveyors, rollers, chains, sprockets, shafts, gearboxes, bearings, pumps and drive systems.
  • Service hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including cylinders, valves and compressed‑air equipment.

About You

To succeed in this role, you will ideally have:

  • A relevant trade qualification, such as the New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Trade) (Level 4), Fitting and Machining, Maintenance Engineering, or an equivalent apprenticeship.
  • At least five years’ maintenance experience in a continuous manufacturing environment such as steel, food, packaging, timber or plastics.
  • Strong mechanical fault‑finding and problem‑solving skills.
  • Practical experience with conveyors, rotating equipment, hydraulics and pneumatics.
  • Experience using a computerised maintenance management system and completing preventative maintenance.
  • An understanding of PLC‑controlled machinery and the ability to work effectively with electrical and automation specialists.
  • A strong commitment to health and safety.
  • The ability to work independently, remain calm during breakdowns and communicate clearly with production staff.
  • Good planning, organisation and attention to detail.
  • Flexibility to participate in on‑call or rotating‑shift arrangements if required.
Desirable Skills
  • Electrical Service Technician registration or a dual trade.
  • PLC diagnostics and variable speed drive knowledge.
  • Laser alignment, vibration analysis or thermography experience.
  • Machining capability using lathes or milling equipment.
  • A forklift licence or Elevated Work Platform certification.
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing, Total Productive Maintenance or Kaizen.
