The Opportunity

This is a hands-on mechanical maintenance role for a practical fitter, fitter turner or maintenance engineer who wants steady hours, varied plant work and weekends free.

It’s night shift, but it’s a clean setup: four nights on, three days off, every week. No rotating roster. No regular weekend work.

Production runs during the day, then the maintenance team comes in at night with full access to the plant. You’re not trying to squeeze jobs around operators, production pressure and half-available equipment. You can get in, inspect, repair, replace, adjust and leave the plant ready for the next day.

The Role

You’ll join a small maintenance team working across heavy industrial production equipment.

Each shift is guided by clear work orders, but this is not a tick-box role. Some jobs will be planned maintenance. Others will involve getting into a machine centre, finding what’s worn or failing, and fixing it before it becomes tomorrow’s breakdown.

The work may include:

  • Bearing changes, chains, sprockets and mechanical repairs.
  • Welding, fabrication, fitting and machinery adjustments.
  • Machine inspections and follow-up repairs.
  • Planned maintenance and shutdown work.
  • Recording completed work, parts used and issues found.
  • Supporting practical improvement work across the plant.

The right person will look at machinery properly, think about what they’re seeing, and take pride in fixing things well.

The Engineering Environment

The site has been rebuilding its engineering function with a stronger focus on planned maintenance, better machine inspections and proper follow-through.

You’ll be working with an engineering leader who understands maintenance and values people who bring pride, pace and practical judgement to the job.

Someone who says what they see, works well with a small team, and leaves equipment in better condition than they found it.

This is a physical industrial environment. It will suit someone who likes real machinery, practical problem-solving and being trusted to get on with the job.

What You’ll Bring

You don’t need to be perfect on paper, but you do need real mechanical maintenance experience.

A trade qualification would be useful, but practical ability matters most. You may come from a background as a Maintenance Fitter, Fitter Turner, Mechanical Fitter, Plant Maintenance Engineer, or a Welder/Fabricator with strong maintenance experience.

You’ll bring:

  • Strong fitting and general mechanical repair skills.
  • Welding ability and confidence using tools properly.
  • Experience with bearings, chains, sprockets and moving plant.
  • Good fault-finding and practical judgement.
  • The ability to work across the whole repair, not just one narrow task.
  • Pride in your work and the confidence to speak up when something isn’t right.

This won’t suit someone looking for a clean, narrow or highly specialised maintenance role. It will suit someone who is hands‑on, reliable and comfortable working around heavy plant.

Hours & Location

This is a night shift role working Monday to Thursday, 5.00pm to 5.00am.

There may be some additional project or shutdown work from time to time, but weekend work is not the normal setup.

The role is based in Marlborough, offering a strong lifestyle base for someone who enjoys the outdoors, the water, cycling trails, rural living options, good weather and a slower pace than the main centres.

For someone considering relocation, it’s a practical move as well as a lifestyle one, with more affordable housing options than many larger cities.
