Job description

Jora New Zealand will close on 16th September 2026. Thank you for being with us, we are cheering you on as you continue your career journey.

New Zealand Couriers – Christchurch, South Island

New Zealand Couriers have been helping Kiwis get their deliveries sorted since 1964. We are a nationwide team of over 1,100 people and we deliver tens of millions of parcels a year. We are committed, we know our stuff and we're proud to serve the communities we work in.

About The Freight Hub

The Freight Hub operates an automated freight-sorting facility near Christchurch Airport. Our team manages courier freight for the wider Christchurch region, freight moving between centres throughout the South Island and inter-island freight moving through our air and road networks.

The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced and practical Maintenance Engineer to join our Freight Hub engineering team.

The main focus of this hands‑on role is completing maintenance, welding, fabrication and mechanical repairs on our freight‑handling equipment, including cages, trolleys and other operational assets. You will help ensure our equipment remains safe, reliable and fit for purpose.

You will also support the wider engineering team with routine inspections, planned maintenance, basic fault‑finding and breakdown assistance on our Beumer cross‑belt sorter and associated conveyor systems. Training on the sortation equipment can be provided.

Key Responsibilities
  • Complete welding, fabrication and mechanical repairs on freight cages, trolleys and other operational equipment.
  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance.
  • Inspect equipment, identify faults and complete repairs safely and promptly.
  • Identify opportunities to improve equipment safety and reliability.
  • Assist with inspections, maintenance, fault‑finding and breakdown support on the cross‑belt sorter and conveyor systems.
  • Ensure safe working practices, permits and isolation procedures are followed.
  • Keep maintenance records and spare‑parts information accurate and up to date.
  • Assist with building maintenance and contractor coordination.
  • Participate in rostered after‑hours breakdown support when required.
About You

You will be reliable, practical and solutions‑focused, with a strong hands‑on approach. You will take pride in completing repairs to a high standard and be comfortable working in a busy operational environment.

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:

  • Strong welding, fabrication and mechanical repair experience.
  • A relevant mechanical engineering or trade qualification.
  • Strong mechanical and fault‑finding skills.
  • Experience maintaining industrial, freight‑handling or materials‑handling equipment.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance and breakdown repairs.
  • A strong commitment to health and safety.
  • Good computer and record‑keeping skills.
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills with the ability to work effectively with engineering and operational teams, contractors, suppliers and other stakeholders.
  • The flexibility to provide rostered after‑hours breakdown support.

Electrical experience or previous experience with conveyors, automated equipment or cross‑belt sortation systems would be an advantage but is not essential, as training can be provided.

What We Offer
  • A permanent, full‑time position.
  • Competitive remuneration based on your skills and experience.
  • A varied and practical engineering role.
  • The opportunity to develop experience with automated sortation systems.
  • A supportive and diverse team environment.
  • Full PPE and required safety equipment.

Applicants must currently reside in New Zealand and hold the appropriate visa, residency or work rights.

The successful applicant will be required to provide satisfactory references and complete a criminal history check and pre‑employment drug test.
