Auckland University of Technology (AUT) is New Zealand's newest university and one of its most distinctive. Centred on students and grounded in knowledge that works, AUT is 5-star rated by QS, with more than 27,000 students and 4,000 staff based primarily across three Auckland campuses. It's a place of real opportunity, where the values of Pono, Tika and Aroha shape how talented, progressive people work together and you'll feel that in the culture, in the collaboration and in the difference the work makes for students, communities and the world.

Our community is stronger because of the role Te Tiriti plays in how we operate, and because Māori and Pacific knowledge, leadership and contribution are central to who we are. We embrace diversity in all its forms and are proud to welcome people of all ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, religious and political beliefs, socio-economic situations and accessibility needs.

Te Mātāpuna Library and Learning Services plays a central role in supporting student learning, academic success, and lifelong learning capability across AUT. Through expert learning support, information literacy development, digital capability building, and academic engagement initiatives, the team works collaboratively with students, faculties, and professional services to create an inclusive and empowering learning environment. As part of AUT's commitment to educational excellence and equity, Te Mātāpuna is on an ongoing indigenisation journey and contributes actively to AUT's commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

We are seeking an experienced and student-focused Learning Specialist to join our Learning and Academic Engagement team on a fixed-term basis.

Reporting to the Senior Manager Learning and Academic Engagement, you will play a key role in developing and delivering inclusive academic learning support services that enhance the success of undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students.

This role offers the opportunity to design and facilitate a range of learning interventions, including individual consultations, small-group sessions, workshops, orientation programmes, and learning resources. You will support students to strengthen their academic literacies, digital capabilities, study skills, and confidence in navigating university learning environments.

Working closely with colleagues across Te Mātāpuna, faculties, and other university divisions, you will contribute to the design of innovative and accessible learning experiences. You will also monitor and evaluate programme effectiveness, using data and student feedback to continuously improve service delivery and student outcomes.

This is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on student success while helping shape academic learning support and development across the University and supporting AUT's Te Aronui journey. Please note this role will require some evening teaching.

At AUT you'll be part of a values-led university with a strong, caring culture, flexible working, generous annual leave and support to thrive in your role and career. We provide the tools, trust, recognition frameworks and cultural capability development programmes to help you make a meaningful contribution.

As a professional staff member at AUT, you'll help our university thrive by improving services, supporting students and staff, and driving practical improvements across our campuses. We're looking for someone with energy, curiosity, and a passion for student success, who brings a collaborative and inclusive approach to their work.

You’ll also bring cultural humility and respect for Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Indigenous peoples, and diverse communities. Experience supporting equity, accessibility, and inclusion-focused initiatives will be highly valued.

To be successful in this role, you will have:
  • experience with designing and delivering academic skills development and support
  • strong relationship-building skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across a range of stakeholders
  • experience using data and research to inform continuous improvement
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • 5 - 7 years’ experience of relevant teaching in tertiary or secondary education
  • a teaching qualification
  • Master of Education, Master of Applied Linguistics or similar, or working towards a similar qualification
  • Curiosity about and experience of working with AI and other emerging technologies for learning
  • A commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and supporting AUT's Te Aronui journey
