Job summary

EROAD is seeking an intermediate Software Engineer to join its Java engineering team in Albany. You’ll own backend features end to end with security, scalability and testability in mind, building microservices and RESTful APIs for our cloud-native SaaS platform.

You’ll work with AI coding tools, review AI-generated output before merge, and contribute to testing and deployment, on-call rotations and a collaborative engineering culture.

Qualifications

• Production experience with Java in backend systems.
• Experience reviewing AI-generated code before merge.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred).
• Experience with microservices and RESTful API design.
• Experience with MongoDB, PostgreSQL or SQL Server.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

EROAD is a Kiwi success story in fleet management technology, listed on both the NZX and ASX and growing across New Zealand, Australia, the Philippines and the USA, and this growth is behind the need for an intermediate Software Engineer to join its Java engineering team in Albany.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

You’ll own delivery of backend features end to end, designing with security, scalability and testability in mind from the start. Build and evolve microservices and RESTful APIs for a cloud-native, event-driven SaaS platform. Decompose engineering tasks into work suited to AI agents versus work that needs human judgement. Review and correct AI-generated code before it merges, catching failure modes before they reach production. Design and implement automated tests across unit, component and integration levels. Take part in an on-call rotation, compensated per EROAD policy. Report to the Chapter Lead as part of a collaborative engineering team.

WHAT YOU NEED

• Production experience with Java in backend systems.
• Hands-on experience using AI coding tools or agents in real engineering work, including reviewing and correcting AI-generated output before merge.
• Experience with AWS is preferred for this Java and Spring stack, though equivalent cloud-native experience on another platform is fine if your Java depth is strong.
• Microservice architecture and RESTful API design experience.
• Experience with MongoDB, PostgreSQL or SQL Server.
• Automated testing design and implementation across unit, component and integration levels.
• Git experience, including trunk-based development and CI/CD.
• Docker and containerisation experience.
• Basic monitoring, alerting and observability experience.
