Job summary

RDCL invites an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to join our Hawke's Bay team, combining hands-on fieldwork with geological interpretation, reporting and client engagement. You will work on diverse projects, with opportunities to travel within New Zealand and internationally.

Key duties include planning site investigations, geotechnical assessments, slope stability and foundation design, plus coordinating field activities and ensuring safe, on-time delivery.

Qualifications

• A tertiary qualification in Engineering or related discipline; honours or postgraduate study advantageous.
• At least four years of geotechnical consulting experience, NZ experience preferred.
• Experience in site investigations, geological logging and data interpretation.
• Strong technical writing, analytical and communication skills for senior review.
• NZ residency or a valid NZ work visa and a clean full NZ driver licence.

Responsibilities

• Interpret geological and geotechnical information, contribute to ground models, and identify geohazards and ground-related risks.
• Prepare proposals, investigation scopes, factual and interpretive reports, and clear technical recommendations under senior review.
• Complete geotechnical assessments, slope stability and foundation assessments, foundation design and earthworks inspections.
• Coordinate field activities, equipment and subcontractors, and ensure work is delivered safely, on time and within budget.
• Liaise with clients, contractors and the RDCL team, and support graduates and field technicians.

We are expanding our team in Hawke's Bay and are looking for an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer ready to take the next step in their consulting career. At RDCL, you will contribute across the full project lifecycle, combining hands-on fieldwork with geological interpretation, technical reporting and client engagement. You will work on a diverse range of projects, with opportunities to travel within New Zealand and internationally.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and undertake site investigations, including geological mapping, soil and rock logging, field testing and construction observations
• Interpret geological and geotechnical information, contribute to ground models, and identify geohazards and ground-related risks
• Prepare proposals, investigation scopes, factual and interpretive reports, and clear technical recommendations under appropriate senior review
• Complete geotechnical assessments, slope stability and foundation assessments, foundation design (retaining walls/piles, etc.), earthworks inspections, and other project deliverables appropriate to your experience
• Coordinate field activities, equipment and subcontractors, and help deliver assigned work safely, on time and within budget
• Liaise professionally with clients, contractors and RDCL's geotechnical engineers, geologists, geophysicists and field technicians
• Support graduate staff and field technicians by sharing practical knowledge and providing day-to-day guidance when required

About you

• A relevant tertiary qualification in Engineering or a related discipline; honours or postgraduate study is advantageous
• At least four years' relevant geotechnical consulting experience, including New Zealand experience or a sound understanding of New Zealand geology and ground conditions
• Practical experience in site investigations, geological logging, field data collection and interpretation
• Strong technical writing, analytical and communication skills, with the ability to produce accurate work for senior review
• Practical shallow and deep foundation and remediation design experience
• Good organisation and commercial awareness, with the ability to manage assigned tasks, priorities and budgets across multiple projects
• A collaborative, practical approach and confidence working independently within agreed levels of responsibility
• A strong commitment to health, safety, quality and respectful client service
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with geological, GIS, CAD or modelling software is advantageous
• New Zealand residency or a valid New Zealand work visa, and a clean full New Zealand driver licence
