Job summary

A Christchurch-based multidisciplinary consultancy is seeking an early career Geotechnical Engineer or Geologist to join their team, offering a balanced mix of fieldwork and technical office delivery across residential, commercial and land development projects.

You'll work with senior engineers and geologists, developing technical judgement and client-facing skills while gaining exposure to a broad range of project types and ground conditions in NZ.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor-level or higher in geotechnical related field (BE Civil, Washington Accord, or BSc Geology).
  • 2–4 years NZ-based experience in geotechnical engineering or engineering geology.
  • Experience with field investigations and interpreting ground conditions.
  • Interest in NZ geotechnical standards and design practices.
  • Strong report-writing and written communication; collaborative mindset.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with geotechnical investigations and ground assessments.
  • Perform geological mapping, logging, and field assessments.
  • Support site investigations and construction monitoring.
  • Help prepare technical reports and design documentation.

A well-regarded multidisciplinary consultancy are currently seeking an early career/Junior Geotechnical Engineer or Geologist to join their Christchurch team, working across a genuine mix of fieldwork and office-based technical delivery.

This is a great next step for someone with a few years under their belt who wants to keep building their technical skillset while getting broader exposure to project delivery, client interaction, and site work.

About the Role

You'll get hands-on exposure across the full project lifecycle, working alongside experienced engineers and geologists on residential, commercial and land development projects. Day to day, you'll be involved in:

  • Assisting with geotechnical investigations, ground assessments and analysis
  • Geological mapping, logging and field assessments
  • Supporting site investigations and construction monitoring
  • Helping prepare technical reports and design documentation
  • Liaising with clients, contractors and project teams as part of a wider delivery team
  • Building your technical foundation across a variety of project types and ground conditions

You'll be supported by senior team members while being given the opportunity to develop your own technical judgement, client-facing skills, and project experience over time.

About You

To be considered for this role, you'll likely bring:

  • A BE (Civil), Washington Accord or a BSc in Geology.
  • Circa 2-4 years' NZ based experience in geotechnical engineering or engineering geology
  • Exposure to field investigations and interpreting ground conditions
  • An interest in developing knowledge of NZ geotechnical standards and design practices
  • Good technical and report-writing skills, with an eagerness to develop further
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach
  • A proactive, solutions-focused mindset
