About The Paint Factory Limited

The Paint Factory Limited is a New Zealand specialist contractor delivering passive fire protection, intumescent coating and protective coating solutions for structural steel.

We work across commercial, residential, healthcare, industrial and infrastructure projects, supporting clients from technical review and surface preparation through to coating application, inspection, quality assurance and project handover. Our focus is on delivering reliable workmanship backed by disciplined application procedures, coating thickness verification, environmental monitoring and documented QA.

Our capability includes specialist coating applicators, fire coating inspection capability and structured quality-control processes. As our workload continues to grow, we are expanding our Auckland and Hamilton teams and are looking for experienced industrial painters who take pride in producing high-quality work.

About the Role

We are seeking Industrial Painters to join our project teams in Auckland and Hamilton.

This is a full-time, site-based role working primarily on structural steel coating projects. You will be involved in the preparation and application of intumescent fire protection coatings and protective coating systems using airless spray, roller and brush application methods as required.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing structural steel and other substrates before coating application

  • Cleaning, sanding, mechanical preparation and other surface-preparation activities as required

  • Mixing and preparing coating products in accordance with manufacturer requirements

  • Applying primers, intumescent coatings, protective coatings and topcoats as specified

  • Operating airless spray equipment and associated painting equipment

  • Applying coatings by spray, roller and brush

  • Following project specifications, product data sheets and site instructions

  • Working to specified coating thickness and finish requirements

  • Assisting with wet‑film and dry‑film thickness checks where required

  • Protecting adjacent surfaces and controlling overspray

  • Carrying out touch‑ups and coating repairs

  • Cleaning and maintaining spray equipment and tools

  • Following site health and safety requirements and using PPE correctly

  • Working closely with supervisors, project managers and other site trades

  • Maintaining good productivity while meeting required quality standards

What We Are Looking For

Ideally, you will have:

  • Previous experience in industrial, structural steel or commercial painting

  • Experience with airless spray application

  • Experience applying protective coatings, intumescent coatings or similar specialist coating systems

  • Practical knowledge of surface preparation and coating application

  • Ability to follow technical data sheets, specifications and work instructions

  • Experience using spray guns, pumps, compressors and preparation equipment

  • Good attention to coating quality, coverage and finish

  • A strong understanding of construction-site health and safety

  • Ability to work safely at height using appropriate access equipment and PPE

  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a site team

  • Reliability, punctuality and a professional attitude

  • Ability to work across different project locations within the Auckland or Hamilton regions

A recognised painting/coatings qualification, specialist coating certification or previous passive fire protection experience would be an advantage, but relevant practical industry experience will also be considered.

  • Develop specialist experience in intumescent and protective coating systems

  • Work with professional coating inspection and QA processes
