Job summary

Apparelmaster ChCh Ltd – Christchurch, South Island is seeking an energetic Maintenance Engineer to join our team. The role focuses on preventative maintenance, equipment reliability, and supporting upgrades across mechanical and electrical systems.

Key responsibilities include maintaining plant equipment, conducting inspections, repairing boilers and steam distribution, and working with PLCs/HMIs. You will use MEX and collaborate with contractors and our in-house team.

Qualifications

• Trade qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
• Minimum 3 years' experience in a maintenance engineering role.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with experience in industrial machinery, steam systems and boilers, pneumatics, and automated equipment.
• Basic electrical knowledge.
• Ability to read and interpret schematics, diagrams, and technical documentation.
• Good understanding of PLCs, HMIs, and associated sensors.
• Strong fitting, fabrication, and general workshop organizational skills.
• Well-organized, detail-focused, and able to prioritize tasks effectively.
• Must be safety-conscious and committed to following safe work practices.
• Eligible to work in New Zealand (NZ residency or valid work visa required).

Responsibilities

• Maintain and improve reliability of all plant equipment — mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and steam systems.
• Conduct preventative maintenance routines and inspections across the facility.
• Maintain and repair large commercial ironers, dry-cleaning machines, automatic folding machines, boilers and steam distribution systems.
• Identify and report abnormal equipment conditions so maintenance can be scheduled.
• Troubleshoot faults and carry out repairs to minimize downtime.
• Work with PLCs, sensors, and HMIs including basic PLC fault-finding and understanding of machine settings and operational parameters.
• Use the online maintenance system (MEX) to record tasks, plan future work, and manage parts inventory.
• Contribute to upcoming Major Expansion projects.
• Work collaboratively with contractors, suppliers, and the in-house engineering team.
