Job summary

Tait Communications in Christchurch, NZ is seeking an Industrial Designer to join our UX team and help shape mission-critical products for public safety, transport and utilities.

You will collaborate with product management, hardware and mechanical engineering, and external partners to translate user needs into beautifully engineered CAD models using PTC Creo, Blender, and KeyShot, while mentoring junior designers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (NZQA Level 7) in a relevant field.
  • At least three years of experience in a physical product development environment.
  • Strong knowledge of user-centered design and development methodologies.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across multiple projects.
  • Experience with external manufacturing and development partners.

Responsibilities

  • Engage with customers, users, sales and product management to identify latent needs and opportunities.
  • Lead user-centric design methodologies and communicate ideas via sketches, CAD models and renderings.
  • Prototype, run user tests and incorporate feedback to validate design hypotheses.
  • Stay current with industry practices, materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Contribute to Tait's design language for a consistent product identity.
  • Translate concepts into manufacturing-ready CAD models using PTC Creo with internal/external teams.
  • Mentor junior designers and promote best practices within the team.
  • Manage the technical and user experience aspects of packaging.
