Job summary

Tait Communications in Christchurch is seeking an embedded software engineer to join the Terminals Team. You will work across the stack, from platform code to firmware, focusing on low‑level optimization and wireless integrations for mission‑critical radio products.

You will bring strong C/C++, embedded firmware experience, and a practical, collaborative mindset in an agile environment. The role offers hands‑on hardware interaction and opportunities to shape product reliability and performance

Qualifications

  • Proven embedded firmware experience in commercial products.
  • Strong C/C++ and RTOS knowledge.
  • Experience across high/low-level software layers.
  • Knowledge of wireless technologies preferred.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain embedded firmware for radio products.
  • Contribute to the design and evolution of platform software, system architecture, and core firmware components.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve complex technical issues across the software stack.
  • Integrate and support technologies such as wireless communications, audio systems, and peripheral interfaces.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver new features and product enhancements.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives, including software quality, development practices, and technical processes.

We Go Beyond for A Safer World Te Tūranga - The Role

We are looking for a Software Engineer to join our Terminals Team, a collaborative group of around 30 software developers and testers responsible for the software that powers our mission‑critical radio solutions. Our products are trusted by emergency services, utilities, and enterprise organisations around the world, helping people stay connected when communication matters most. This role is ideal for a versatile embedded software engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and working across different layers of a product's software architecture. You'll have the opportunity to contribute throughout the stack, although a strong interest in platform and low‑level firmware development would be particularly valuable. From working close to hardware and optimising system performance, to integrating wireless technologies and addressing system‑level challenges, you'll play an important role in shaping the capability, reliability, and future direction of our products. You'll join an experienced team that values technical excellence, collaboration, and building high‑quality solutions that perform in demanding real‑world environments.

Key Responsibilities include:
  • Design, develop, and maintain embedded firmware for mobile and portable radio products.
  • Contribute to the design and evolution of platform software, system architecture, and core firmware components.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve complex technical issues across the software stack.
  • Integrate and support technologies such as wireless communications, audio systems, and peripheral interfaces.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to deliver new features and product enhancements.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives, including software quality, development practices, and technical processes.

You will join us as an embedded software engineer who enjoys solving technical problems and delivering high‑quality products. You'll bring a strong technical foundation, a practical approach to development, and a passion for building reliable solutions that make a real‑world impact.

You will bring:
  • Proven experience developing embedded firmware for commercial products.
  • Strong programming skills in C/C++
  • Experience developing software for embedded and real‑time systems.
  • A solid understanding of software design principles, debugging, and problem‑solving techniques.
  • Experience working across different layers of a software architecture, from platform‑level code through to application functionality.
  • The ability to collaborate effectively with cross‑functional teams in an agile development environment.
  • Experience with Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, audio technologies, or other wireless communications would be highly regarded.
  • Exposure to radio communications systems, device drivers, or hardware‑near software development would be an advantage.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
