Foleys is seeking an experienced Hydraulic & Design Engineer to join our Estimating and Design team to deliver high-quality hydraulic and mechanical building services solutions across our national operations. This hands-on technical role runs from concept to detailed design, coordination and certification, with technical leadership across the business.

Qualifications

  • CPEng registration is required.
  • Minimum 10 years' professional engineering experience.
  • Engineering degree in Mechanical, Civil, Building Services or related.
  • Extensive experience in hydraulic building services design.
  • Experience preparing Producer Statements PS1.

Responsibilities

  • Develop hydraulic and mechanical building services designs for commercial and industrial projects.
  • Produce drawings, schematics, specs and technical documentation using CAD/BIM.
  • Complete drafting and modelling as part of project delivery.
  • Coordinate mechanical services including HVAC, ventilation, heating and cooling.
  • Coordinate with architectural, structural, electrical disciplines.
  • Liaise with councils, BCA, consultants and clients.
  • Provide technical guidance on complex design matters.

The Role

You’ll be responsible for the end-to-end delivery of hydraulic and mechanical building services designs across commercial and industrial projects. This will include:

  • Developing detailed hydraulic and mechanical building services designs.

  • Producing drawings, schematics, specifications and technical documentation using CAD/BIM software.

  • Completing detailed drafting and modelling as part of project delivery.

  • Designing and coordinating mechanical services, including HVAC, ventilation, heating and cooling where required.

  • Providing CPEng engineering oversight and preparing and signing Producer Statements (PS1).

  • Reviewing designs for compliance with the NZ Building Code, relevant standards and council requirements.

  • Developing alternative solutions and supporting complex consent pathways where required.

  • Coordinating hydraulic and mechanical services with architectural, structural, electrical and other disciplines.

  • Managing clashes and design conflicts through BIM coordination.

  • Liaising with councils, Building Consent Authorities, consultants, clients and project teams.

  • Providing technical guidance on complex design matters and supporting practical, buildable solutions.

Technical Leadership

This role will be a key technical resource for hydraulic and mechanical design across Foleys nationally.

You’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Act as the technical point of contact for hydraulic and mechanical design.

  • Support and mentor junior designers and BIM team members.

  • Review design quality and consistency across projects.

  • Develop and improve design processes, standards and templates.

  • Share technical knowledge and expertise across our national branch network.

  • Help ensure our designs are practical, compliant, cost-effective and buildable.

About You

We’re looking for an experienced engineer who brings strong technical capability, sound judgement and a practical understanding of how design translates into outcomes on site.

To be successful in this role, you’ll have:

  • CPEng registration.

  • At least 10 years' professional engineering experience.

  • An engineering degree in Mechanical, Civil, Building Services or a related discipline.

  • At least 10 years' experience in engineering, with strong demonstrated experience in hydraulic building services design.

  • Experience preparing and signing Producer Statements (PS1).

  • Strong knowledge of the NZ Building Code and relevant hydraulic and mechanical services standards.

  • Demonstrated mechanical design capability, including HVAC and building services systems.

  • Strong CAD/BIM capability.

  • Experience working on commercial and/or industrial projects.

  • Excellent communication, coordination and stakeholder management skills.

  • The ability to develop practical, cost-conscious and buildable design solutions.

  • The confidence to provide technical leadership and make sound engineering decisions.
