Job summary

Smith Crane & Construction in Auckland is seeking two experienced mechanics to service a diverse fleet of cranes and heavy equipment. You will diagnose faults, perform routine servicing, and tackle major repairs on crawler cranes, trucks, and trailers.

You’ll join a family-owned business with a strong safety culture and teamwork. Requirements include a NZ trade qualification in Heavy Automotive or Heavy Diesel Engineering and at least 3 years post-trade experience.

Qualifications

  • New Zealand trade qualification in Heavy Automotive Engineering, Heavy Diesel Engineering.
  • Minimum 3 years' post-trade experience as a Heavy Diesel Mechanic or in a similar role.
  • Strong background in servicing and repairing heavy plant or similar equipment.
  • Strong fault-finding skills in mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems.
  • Self-motivated, reliable, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Full New Zealand class 1 driver’s licence, or an equivalent international licence that can be recognised or converted in NZ.

Responsibilities

  • Attend on-site or workshop equipment failures, diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical faults, and communicate repair plans clearly.
  • Perform routine servicing and repairs on crawler cranes, trucks, and trailers, including major component replacements.
  • Troubleshoot and repair batteries, starters, alternators, sensors, lighting, and hydraulic systems, collaborating on complex issues as needed.
  • Assist with setup, removal, and general operational support of heavy plant machinery.
  • Maintain a clean, safe workshop, log repairs digitally, and manage spare parts efficiently.
  • Work with operators, foremen, and managers to reduce downtime, mentor apprentices, and stay current with training and equipment updates.

What You’ll be Doing:

What We’re Looking For:

A recognised New Zealand trade qualification in Heavy Automotive Engineering, Heavy Diesel Engineering, or an equivalent international qualification.

Minimum 3 years' relevant post-trade experience as a Heavy Diesel Mechanic or in a similar heavy equipment/mechanical role.

Strong background in servicing and repairing heavy plant or similar equipment

Strong fault-finding skills in mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems

Self-motivated, reliable, and able to work independently or as part of a team

Full New Zealand class 1 driver’s licence, or an equivalent international driver’s licence that can be recognised or converted in New Zealand. Class 2–5 and WTR endorsements are advantageous but not a requirement

What We Offer:

Pay rate: $38.00 - $53.00 per hour, depending on skills and experience.

A modern, fully equipped service vehicle for work and commute use

Overtime rate: time and a half after 40 hours worked per week

Location: Auckland
