Job summary

Truckstops in Nelson is seeking a skilled Diesel Technician to diagnose faults, service heavy trucks, and perform complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic repairs in a modern workshop. You will mentor apprentices and collaborate with a experienced team to keep vehicles performing at their best.

The role offers ongoing OEM and technical training, career progression, and a supportive workshop environment with a strong customer focus.

Qualifications

  • Recognised heavy automotive or diesel trade qualification.
  • Experience working on heavy trucks, buses, transport equipment, or similar machinery.
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
  • Experience working with modern vehicle electronics and diagnostic software.
  • A current full New Zealand driver''s licence.
  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand.
  • HT licence preferred but we can help you obtain them!

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair faults across heavy commercial vehicles and associated systems.
  • Carry out routine servicing and preventative maintenance.
  • Complete mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic repairs.
  • Perform inspections and identify additional repair opportunities.
  • Utilise diagnostic tools and manufacturer systems effectively.
  • Complete job documentation accurately and efficiently.
  • Ensure all work is completed safely and meets quality standards.
  • Contribute to a positive, professional, and customer-focused workshop culture.

At Truckstops, we're passionate about keeping New Zealand's transport industry moving. To make sure that happens, we're looking for an experienced Diesel Technician to join our busy Nelson workshop. If you're a skilled tradesperson who enjoys diagnosing faults, solving technical challenges, and working on heavy vehicles in a modern workshop environment, we'd love to hear from you.

About the Role

Reporting to the Service Manager, you'll diagnose and repair mechanical issues using cutting-edge diagnostic tools, and conduct routine maintenance, service, and inspections to keep our trucks performing at their best. You'll collaborate with experienced pros, mentor apprentices, and continuously grow your skills.

This is a minimum 40 hours a week with a rostered Saturday. There is also an expectation to work after hours callouts as needed on a rostered basis, and flexibility to travel for work and training as and when required.

This role offers excellent variety, ongoing technical development, and the opportunity to work with advanced truck technology and industry-leading products.

About You

To be successful, you'll ideally have:

  • A recognised Heavy Automotive or Diesel Trade qualification

  • Experience working on heavy trucks, buses, transport equipment, or similar machinery

  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills

  • Experience working with modern vehicle electronics and diagnostic software

  • A proactive approach to problem-solving

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills

  • A commitment to workplace health and safety

  • A current full New Zealand driver's licence

  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand

A HT licence preferred but we can help you obtain them!
