Job summary

Tradestaff in Hamilton is seeking an experienced Asphalter to step up into a Team Lead role. You will lead from the front, oversee roading and civil projects, and ensure quality workmanship while managing daily site operations.

Immediate start with a hands-on approach, leading a crew and coordinating labour, plant and materials. Expect 10–12 hour shifts, a supportive team, and on-site leadership opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as an Asphalter capable of leading a crew.
  • Experience in planning and coordinating daily site operations.
  • Comfortable with long shifts and on-site leadership responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise the asphalt crew across roading and civil projects, coordinating labour, plant, materials and equipment.
  • Plan and manage daily site operations to keep work progressing to programme.
  • Oversee asphalt preparation, laying, compaction and finishing to specifications.
  • Monitor temperatures, thickness and quality, addressing issues as they arise.
  • Operate and supervise asphalt and civil machinery with safety checks.
  • Manage site safety and traffic management; enforce Health & Safety procedures.
  • Complete QA documentation and communicate with supervisors, PMs, subcontractors and clients.

This is a hands‑on opportunity where you’ll lead from the front while helping deliver quality roading and civil projects.
Location: Hamilton, Hamilton
Start date: Immediate
Pay rate: $30–$35 per hour, paid weekly

What you'll be doing
  • Lead and supervise the asphalt crew across roading and civil projects, coordinating daily labour, plant, materials, equipment and work activities.
  • Plan and manage daily site operations, including pre‑start meetings, toolbox talks, job planning and keeping work progressing to programme.
  • Oversee asphalt preparation, laying, spreading, compaction, finishing and repairs, ensuring work meets required plans and specifications.
  • Monitor asphalt temperatures, levels, falls, thickness and finished quality, addressing workmanship or quality issues as they arise.
  • Operate and oversee the safe use of asphalt and civil machinery, including rollers, compactors and paving equipment, ensuring appropriate checks and maintenance are completed.
  • Manage site safety and traffic management requirements, identify hazards and controls, and ensure the crew follows all Health & Safety procedures.
  • Complete QA documentation and site records, communicate with supervisors, project managers, subcontractors and clients, and train and mentor less‑experienced team members.

What we're looking for

  • Strong understanding of asphalt operations and the responsibilities involved in leading a crew.
  • Full NZ Class 1 driver licence is essential.
  • WTR endorsements and a Class 2 licence are beneficial.
  • Comfortable working day and night shifts depending on the roster, with shifts typically between 10–12 hours.
