Job description

Environmental Manager - North Island Renewables

At Genesis, we’re always looking ahead - to new possibilities, smarter solutions, and a better energy future for Aotearoa New Zealand. Every role here plays a part in shaping what’s next, whether it’s through cutting-edge technology, bold thinking, or everyday excellence. If you’re driven by progress and inspired by purpose, this is your chance to be part of something remarkable. Step into a career where your actions today help power tomorrow.

What you’ll do:

This is a significant opportunity to shape the environmental future of one of Aotearoa New Zealand's leading renewable energy portfolios. As the Environmental Manager - North Island Renewables, you will lead the environmental programme across our North Island renewable generation assets, ensuring environmental excellence. Reporting to our GM - Environment, you'll manage environmental management programmes, resource consent acquisition and compliance, and provide strategic environmental advice that enables sustainable operations.

This is a highly influential role where you'll build and maintain trusted relationships with mana whenua, regulatory authorities, community stakeholders, environmental groups and resource users. You'll lead a team of environmental specialists, drive continuous improvement across environmental systems and processes, and provide expert guidance on RMA requirements, environmental planning, project delivery and stakeholder engagement.

You'll work across our North Island renewable assets, making a meaningful contribution to sustainable management of natural resources while supporting the country's renewable energy future.

Please note, this role can be based in either Hamilton or Tokaanu, with travel to our sites across the North Island as required.

What you’ll need:

You're an experienced environmental leader who enjoys working with people as much as you do solving complex environmental challenges. You know how to build trusted relationships, navigate competing interests and provide practical advice that supports both compliance and business outcomes.

  • A tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Management or a related discipline, along with proven experience in a similar environmental management role
  • Strong knowledge of the Resource Management Act, resource consenting processes and environmental planning
  • Experience working with mana whenua and a proven ability to build positive relationships with councils, regulators and other external stakeholders
  • Leadership experience, with the ability to guide and support a team of environmental professionals while managing multiple priorities
  • Experience within the energy sector or another complex infrastructure environment, supported by strong project management, negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills.

How we’ll help you thrive:

At Genesis, we know that every moment matters - it’s not just about the mahi today, it’s also all the other benefits that set you up for a thriving future.

Some of our benefits include:

  • Southern Cross medical insurance, plus life, trauma and income protection insurances
  • Electricity and gas discounts and an extra 20 Power Shout hours per year
  • Up to 4% match on KiwiSaver contributions or 3% with our GenSaver allowance
  • Flexible working and leave options to support you to balance personal and professional needs
  • Annual wellbeing allowance, access to Best Doctors online service for you and your family and other wellbeing offerings
  • Career development opportunities and a supportive learning culture.
